Donlan, Garvey working
out NFL contract kinks
United Press International
WASHINGTON — Chief'
NFL negotiator Jack Donlan
and players’ union boss Ed Gar
vey met again Tuesday to iron
out last-minute disagreements
in the tentative agreement that
ended the 57-day football strike
but still troubles some union
members.
The two sides talked past
midnight Monday at the union’s
Washington offices preparing
final documents in the agree
ment, which has come under
fire since it was announced Nov.

Union officials refused to dis
cuss the Tuesday morning ses
sion, but it was learned that
attorneys Richard Berthelsen
and Joseph A. Yablonski joined
Garvey at the meeting. Donlan,
executive director of the NFL
Management Council, Sargent
Karch, assistant director, and
Dennis Currin, legal counsel,
attended as well, according to
NFLMC spokesman Jim Miller.
“We’ve got a deal and I guess
he (Donlan) just went to tell him
(Garvey) that a deal is a deal,”
Miller said. “1 think the reason
behind (the meeting) is to clarify
some language in the contract.”
Several provisions of the ten
tative contract have drawn fire
from the NFLPA rank and file,
which is expected to vote Friday
on the pact that ended the first
strike in the league’s 63-year his
tory.
Management wants the col
legiate draft extended, in its pre
sent form, through 1992 while
the union wants to agree only
through 1990. The union also
wants the right to negotiate any
extension of the NFL season
beyond its current 16 games, a
right management has not dis
puted .

news conference. Gibson, 49,
left his post after athletic offi

tract.
He was not present at the
news conference.
“After the type of frustrating
season we experienced, I asked
for an extension of my con
tract,” the statement said. “I felt
this way we could have an
opportunity for a successful re
cruiting year.
“The university did not think
an approval of an extension was
appropriate at this time. There
fore, taking both the type of year
and the disapproval of the ex

is in the best interest of the uni

that I resign.”
