Bryan, Texas*(713) 775-4881 gas tax United Press International WASHINGTON — President Reagan Tuesday endorsed a 5- cent-a-gallon raise in the gasoline tax to help pay for repair of the nation’s highways. The plan is expected to pro vide more than 300,000 jobs but the president insisted it is not a program to provide jobs. Reagan, in an appearance in the White House briefing room, also said proposals to speed up next year’s 10 percent tax cut from July to January are still under consideration. Reagan said that “after weighing all the considerations I've decided we should move tor- ward with a program to repair the nation’s major highways and bridges.” He said he would be consulting with Congress, where the proposal is expected to sail through, before submitting the idea for congressional considera tion. The president said the idea has broad bipartisan support and added he is considering a series of other measures to boost the economy. Reagan said the 5-cents-per- gallon increase would cost the av erage motorist about $30 annual ly, money that would help repair miles of aging highways and thousands of bridges.
