CONN United Press International CINCINNATI — The man who gave the world the “Heim lich Maneuver” is now trying to maneuver the world — toward peace. A decade ago, Dr. Henry Heimlich invented what quickly became known as the “Heimlich Maneuver.” It is an anti-choking technique that is widely acclaimed because it’s easy to re member and it works. Heimlich estimates, based on the number of “Thank you for saving my life” letters he has re ceived, that his maneuver already has saved 6,000 people from choking to death. Included in the 6,000 is Presi dent Reagan. In 1976, Reagan was choking on some food and one of his aides, Michael Deaver, used the Heimlich Maneuver to save Reagan’s life. Heimlich recently wrote a let ter to Deaver, saying, “Together we saved one life. Maybe now we can save millions more.” But Heimlich wasn’t refer ring to the maneuver. He had his newest pet project in mind, “Computers for Peace.” Basically, Heimlich believes he has f igured out a formula for world peace — using computers to project world-wide economic needs and then filling each country’s needs by free-flowing trade. “I have studied the causes of war and determined that vir tually every war lias been f ought for one reason: economics,” said Heimlich. op-ranked u better answer (Jime to Eule: “Inter-dependence of trade, that’s the solution to war. Each country says to the other, ‘I will help you, for my benefit.’” The idea is that because coun tries need each other for a better life, they won’t destroy each other. Critics have told Heimlich his idea is very naive, sort of like a simplistic, immature Miss Amer ica candidate breathlessly telling the emcee, “If 1 become Miss America, I will work to bring peace to all the world.” Responds Hemilich, “1 know that’s the image some see, but let me tell you, I am a practical man. “I welcome a challenge. I want it discussed, argued, de bated. But I will tell everyone, ‘If you doubt my idea, don’t just say it won’t work. Tell me what will. 1 want you.
