Sherman Corbett, a left-
handed pitcher from Schertz,
and Todd Edwards, a second
baseman from Houston, have
moved one step closer to becom
ing members of the U.S. baseball
team that will participate in the
Pan American Games held in
Caracas, Venezuela, Aug. 14-29.
The two Aggies are also
potential candidates for the U.S
Olympic baseball team.
Corbett and Edwards went
through tryouts held at V.J.
Keefe Field in San Antonio Oct.
31. They were selected to a na
tion-wide pool of baseball play
ers that will be watched closely
during the spring by the United

Razorbacks have the habit
of flipping switch quickly
If you closed your eyes, you could
almost hear Don Meredith, the ghost of
Mustangs and Cowboys past, his East
Texas drawl crooning from the press box
in Texas Stadium.
“ Turn out the lights, the party’s o-o-o-
v-v-erF'
SMU was indeed turning the lights out
on Texas A&M, turning turnovers into
touchdowns and playing wicked defense.
It was a long Saturday.
Okay, Dandy. Fade the lights, fade
your voice, and fade the Aggies’ bowl
hopes, as Eric Dickerson and the Mus
tangs bounced the Aggies from the ranks
of the bowl-begging, 49-7.
A 4-4 record with two of the top teams
in the nation still left on the slate does not
a bowl contender make. And with Gary
Kubiak on the sideline for an undeter
mined amount of time, things look grim
indeed for the Aggies.
As Dandy Don says, the party is over—
at least for this year.
But Coach Jackie Sherrill and his
Aggies still have a chance to turn the
lights out on Arkansas, Texas and TCU.
Two victories out of three might put the
Aggies back in the bowl picture faster
than SMU grad Meredith could say, “Aw,
shucks, Howard.”
Don’t get your hopes up though. To
risk using a cliche, the Aggies are going
to have to take the rest of the season one

game at a time. First Arkansas, then
TCU, then Texas. It’s going to be a
rough end to a rough season.
But the battle back to the winner’s cir
cle starts Saturday in Little Rock before
an anticipated sellout crowd of about
55,000. The Aggies, minus Kubiak, hope
to generate some kind of offense against
the Razorbacks and All-Everything de
fensive end Billy Ray Smith.
Both sides will be seeing red.
Arkansas, still smarting from a 24-17
upset loss to Baylor, will be out for blood.
With their Nov. 20 shootout with SMU
put on the back burner, the Hogs’ only
hope is to go undefeated the rest of the
season — including a victory over the
Mustangs.
And the Aggies will see red. Lots of it.
Rest assured that the majority of thos
folks in the stands on Saturday wil

The Aggies will attest to that. Hi

Unfortunately, getting to playanen

not always a blessing.
The Razorbacks, with apologies is
Dandy Don Meredith, always have thei
hands on the light switch.
