AMARILLO — Substantial
loan losses have forced the
Texas Bank of Amarillo to close
— the fifth bank to close in
Texas this year and the 37th in
the United States.
A spokesman for the Federal
Deposit Insurance Commission
said late Friday that the closed
bank would re-open today as
First Bank of Amarillo. All de-
positers of the closed bank auto
matically will become depositers
of the assuming bank.
The failed bank’s liabilities
were assumed by First Amarillo
Bancorporation Inc., holding
company for First National
Bank of Amarillo, said FDIC
spokesman Bill Olcheski.
The FDIC was named receiv
er of the failed bank, which was
closed by Texas Banking Com
missioner Robert E. Stewart. He
attributed the failure to “sub
stantial loan losses.”
The arrangement was
approved by a federal judge in
Texas, Olcheski said in
Washington, D.C.
The transaction followed a
meeting of the FDIC’s board of
directors, which selected First
Amarillo Bancorporation to
assume the failed bank’s liabili
ties because it was the high
bidder.
The FDIC said the arrange
ment avoids the necessity for
payoff of the estimated 3,900
accounts in the failed bank.
“It also prevents possible
financial loss to the owners of
deposits that exceeded the statu
tory insurance limit of
$100,000,” the FDIC said.
The purchasers agreed to
pay the FDIC a purchase pre
mium of $982,000, the FDIC
statement said, in addition to
assuming about $9.8 million in
deposits and other liabilities.
The assuming bank will pur
chase die failed bank’sassels

al agency said.
The FDIC will advantt!

SAN ANTONIO — The FBI
used vast resources — agents,
heavy equipment and even a
Navy diving team — to search
for a rifle believed used to kill
federal Judge John Wood Jr.,
but it took a young aluminum-
can collector to locate the
weapon.
El Paso lawyer Joseph Chagra
testified Friclay that accused
gunman Charles Harrelson told
Chagra he killed the judge with
a high-powered Weatherby
Mark V rifle, then tossed it off a
highway bridge east of Dallas.
FBI Agents used heavy
equipment to dam a creek to
make the search less difficult by
halting the flow of water.
But it was 25-year-old Tom
my Hickson of Forney who pul
led a battered wooden Weath
erby rifle stock from the mud
just a half mile from the search
area.
Hickson, who made a living
by collecting aluminum cans
along the roadside, testified he
first saw the gun stock in the fall
of 1979.
“I seen it in a ditch,” said
Hickson, sporting a light blond
beard with his hair tied in a short
ponytail. Hickson said he saw
the rifle stock while walking the
eight miles from Forney to swim
in Lake Ray Hubbard.
When he heard of the FBI’s
search for the gun in April 1981,
he went back and tried to locate
it, but could not. His brother
Bradford relocated the rifle
stock a few days later, however,
when the two were searching for
cans.
Harrelson said he threw the
entire gun away in one piece, Joe
Chagra testified. It has never
been explained why only the
stock was found. Joe Chagra
said both Harrelson and Harrel-
son’s wife Jo Ann told him about
the weapon being discarded
while the husband and wife were
driving.
The man who designed the
rifle said the stock and barrel
were easily removed, however.
Mrs. Harrelson has already
been convicted of using a false
name to buy a Weatherby Mark
V at a Dallas sporting goods
store 12 days before Wood was
killed May 29, 1979.
Joe Chagra, whose testimony
ended after five grueling days
on the witness stand, said his
brother Jimmy had already told
him he hired Harrelson to kill
Wood, and Harrelson later con
firmed it.
But to this day, Chagra said
he believes Harrelson acted with and Elizabeth Chagra, ji
someone else. Chagra’s wife, are on trial
Harrelson, Mrs. Harrelson murder in the killingofllji
