It United Press International BOSTON — Quick intrave nous injection of an enzyme that helps dissolve blood clots can save lives in 25 percent of heart- attack cases and may keep the survivors alive longer, medical researchers said Thursday. A review of a decade of stu dies around the world showed that feeding the enzyme strepto kinase into a vein with a needle is safer and simpler than the in creasingly common practice of feeding the drug through a catheter (a tiny plastic tube) di rectly to the clot, the doctors re ported in the New England Journal of Medicine. Heart attacks, which strike hundreds of thousands of Americans annually, are usually the result of a blood clot stuck in a narrowed artery, interrupting flow of blood to the heart. Death can result if the heart muscle is deprived of blood for too long. Streptokinase starts a process that dissolves clots in the coron ary artery, thereby restoring the muscle’s blood supply. Streptokinase treatment im proved long-term survival rates for heart-attack victims as well as cutting initial mortality rate 20 to 25 percent, the study said. It is most effective when given early, said a member of the re search team, Dr. Samuel Z. Gol- dhaber of Harvard Medical School. When administered 72 hours alter the patient suffered heart- attack symptoms, the enzyme’s ability to keep the patient alive was considerably reduced, the studies showed. The doctors warned, howev er, that the enzyme increased loc al bleeding. The review was prompted be cause of a growing tendency nnong doctors in favor of intra coronary infusion, in which the enzyme is administered directly into a coronary artery by a cathe ter, Goldhaber said. would cal Now you know naCCOQ non, elop e prosecull United Press International The brain can function on but tty. inatnf he tiniest jolt of bodily electric- oukl n 01 wy.
