SEATTLE — David Thomp
son’s reputation may have suf
fered a bit in the last few years,
but according to the Seattle Su-
perSonics and San Antonio
Spurs, he’s still a genuine super-
star.
Thompson sank a dramatic
three-point shot at the buzzer to
lift the Sonics to a 109-107 vic
tory over the Spurs Wednesday
night, handing San Antonio its
first loss of the season and
pushing Seattle to 4-0.
“If I had a Buick, I’d give it to
him,” Seattle coach Lenny Wil-
kens said. “David is a great
player.”
Seattle center Jack Sikma
said: “David hit an almost im
possible shot. To sneak one away
is a good feeling.”
The Sonics blew a 20-point
first half lead and found them
selves trailing 107-106 with two
seconds to play. Thompson took
the inbounds pass from Gus Wil
liams 30 feet from the basket
and was immediately sur
rounded by Spurs Bill Willough
by and Ed Rains.
But the former All-Star guard
used his famed leaping ability to
get the shot off at the buzzer,
instantly bringing the home
crowd of 9,808 — the smallest
ever for a Sonic game in the
Kingdome — to and off its feet.

theory, we defended that shot
perfectly, hut this is a case of
talent prevailing.”
Nicknamed “Luke Skyw'al-
ker” for his tremendous leaping
ability, Thompson was once me
asured as making a 44-inch ver
tical leap, a feat noted in the
Guinness Book of World Re
cords.
He was named to the NBA
All-Star team three times and
Most Valuable Player of the
1979 All-Star contest, but in
juries have hampered the 6-
foot-4 guard and by the end of
last season he was sitting on the
bench for the Denver Nuggets.
Seattle, acquired Thompson
from the Nuggets during the
off-season for Bill Hanzlik, a
guard who averaged under 16
points a game last season, plus a
first-round draft pick. So far this
season, Thompson leads the
Sonics with a 22 points-per-
game average.
