The Euro pean studies program at La Pog gerina was started 11 years ago by Polo Barucchieri, who is from Florence, in 1971 when he taught at the University of Northern Colorado. The study abroad program became an extension of UNG in Florence. The program at Texas A&M is designed for students in architecture and liberal arts. En vironmental design and land scape architecture students use the school during the spring semester while liberal arts stu dents visit La Poggerina in summer. Barucchieri teaches design classes at Texas A&M during the fall semester and teaches art his tory at the Poggerina in the spring and summer. different values, Barucchieri said. He said it is easier to teach students there because they be come involved in the experience. “Living is learning, so the stu dents learn more than in a clas sroom,” he said. The converted monastery has dormitory-style rooms for stu dents and private rooms for fa culty and married students, he said. The food served at the school is traditional Italian cooking pre pared by local women. Most of the produce and wine is pro duced at nearby farms and vineyards, he said. John Booth, a graduating senior in economics, said that during his stay in Scotland his group studied with such multi national companies as IBM and British Petroleum. But he said the program provides for more than just studying the com panies. “It gave us the opportunity to study something in class, then to see it in acton,” he said. Rodrizuez said that she enjoyed this because it gave her the opportunity to go directly out among the people and talk with them. But not all study abroad stu dents go to English-speaking countries. Todd Midgett, a junior in biology; George Boozalis, a senior in biological chemistry; and Craig Schuster, a senior in environmental design, were part of a study abroad group that went to Italy. But Boozalis said it wasn’t much of a handicap not to know the language because the people were friendly. “The people in Italy would stop and ask if we needed a ride into town,” he said. “You don’t find that in America.
