Airplane
crashes,
no fuel
United Press International
HOUSTON — A small plane
apparently ran out of fuel and
crash landed on a residential
street early Monday, about 20
yards from a row of houses, au
thorities said.
The two occupants of the
plane ran from the scene, au
thorities said. There were no in
juries and no damage to the
homes.
The six-passenger, single
engine Piper Lance 2 crash land
ed on Campbell Road in north
east Houston about 12:30 a.m.,
skidded into some trees, then
wrapped around a telephone
pole, Federal Aviation Adminis
tration officials said.
The plane came to rest partly
in a ditch and partly in the two-
lane street, officials said. The
plane's fuel tanks were complete
ly dry.
One witness, Mark Reynolds,
17, said he was driving down the
street when the crash occurred.
“I thought it was a helicopter,
then 1 saw that it was a plane. I
pulled over and stopped, and it
hit all those trees, hit the ground
and stopped over by a light pole.
“I came running and opened
the door of the plane, and the
two guys that were inside the
plane ran off.”
Police officers searched the
plane but said they found no evi
dence of drugs or other contra
bands.
Authorities had not deter
mined where the plane origin
ated or where it was headed, but
they said papers inside the air
craft indicated it may have come
from Ennis, south of Dallas.
Authorities said the plane,
which received wing and tail
damage, would be moved to a
police department storage lot.
Less smuggling of goods
Peso dip cuts crime
United Press International
BROWNSVILLE — The de
valuation of the Mexican peso
has had adverse affects on many
border businesses, including
illegal ones such as the smug
gling of electronic goods into
Mexico, officials say.
Before the devaluation, a
Mexican who bought a television
in Brownsville for $400 had to
pay a 100 percent luxury tax to
the Mexican government when
bringing it into the country, said
Rich Hotchkiss, Brownsville In
ternational Airport administra
tive assistant.
“But if someone bought a car
load, they could get that TV for
$200 or $250, load it on a plane,
fill out a U.S. export declaration
and fly it across the river,” he
said.
But even the discount goods
went out of reach for many Mex
icans when the peso fell to a frac
tion of its former worth.
The capital which once
fueled the lucrative internation
al industry has shriveled drastic
ally, he said, and so have the
charter flights that kept area
aviators hopping.
“We used to sell 2,000 gallons
of fuel in about three days, but
now it takes two weeks,” said Ray
Martinez, an employee at Bor
der Aircraft in Brownsville. And
the same was reported at other
border points, he said.
Martinez said 75 percent of
Brownsville’s pilots are jobless.
The pilots earned $500 to
$1,000 a flight and broke no
American laws in flying the

twin-engine transports south.
“They were paid well because
it was a risky business going into
some of those Mexican air
fields,” said Carlos Gonzales, di
rector of the Laredo airport,
further up the border from
Brownsville. “The facilities were
quite marginal on some occa
sions.”
Some American pilots re
ported close calls.
“Sometimes they’d lly back
here with bullet holes in their
planes, smashed windshields
and broken landing gear,” said
Henry Posio, customs agent in
Brownsville. “The Mexican cus
tomers have a mini-air force and
have shot some of them down.”
But the devaluation did the
work better than the Mexican air
force.
