Wood slaying trial
moves to coverup
United Press International
SAN ANTONIO — Charles
Harrelson not only killed feder
al Judge John H. Wood, pro
secutors say, but with his wife
and others engaged in a three-
year coverup to try to keep from
being caught.
The trial of Charles and Jo
Ann Harrelson and codefen
dant Elizabeth Chagra moved
last week from the actual slaying
of Wood into the later actions
that led to obstruction of justice
charges against all three.
The government says the
Harrelsons convinced relatives
and friends to support their
story that they were at home in
Dallas the morning of May 29,
1979, when Wood was shot in
San Antopio.

Teresa Starr,>< vyho is Mrs.
Harrelson’s daughter, said she
picked up $250,000 in Las
Vegas in June 1979 and re
turned it to the Harrelsons, who
told her to carry the secret of the
errand “to my grave,” Later,
they wrote letters praising her
for going to jail rather than tes
tifying before a grand jury.
A Harrelson friend, Billy T.
Dyer, admitted on the witness
stand that he lied to the FBI,
saying he was with Harrelson
the morning Wood was killed.
But the government still has
reams ol evidence to produce at
the trial, from the judge’s death
to the indictments returned
April 15, 1982, after a $5 million
investigation.
Today, defense lawyers will
argue against allowing the pro
secutors to play the FBI’s wire
taps and bug^onjimmy Chagra
while he was serving time at the
federal prison ih Leavenwbrth,
Kan.

This was the scene Sunday at an exercise to test
the ability of local government agencies to respond
to and handle a major disaster. A simulated wreck
between a school bus and a 6,000-gallon chemical
truck was set up at Kent and Memorial streets in
Bryan. Officials from Bryan, College Station,
Texas A&M University and Brazos County
participated.

Caucus chairman Lena Guer
rero, who also works for an ad
agency that represents Demo
crat Mark While, said the 30-
second spot about utility rates
“needlessly portrays women as
ignorant beings who are easily
misled on issues.”
Clements’ campaign discre
dited her statement because of
her connections with White’s
campaign.
“I think it’s self-evident what
her interests are,” said Clements
spokesman Tony Garrett.
Guerrero said: “My firm
handles a variety of campaigns
for a variety of Democratic can
didates and Mark White is a
client. But I don’t think the Re
publicans or Democrats who
know me would dispute the fact
that I am first and foremost a
feminist.”
In the Clements’ ad, she said,
a woman expresses concern ab
out high utility rates and the fuel
adjustment charge.
A male voice, apparently her
husband, belittles her position
and lists facts and figures to sup
port Clements and attacks
White. Gradually, the woman
changes her mind, she said.
“It perpetrates the stereotype
that women must rely on men
for political and economic
facts,” said Guerrero.
Clements’ media advisers
have chosen to portray the gov
ernor as a “macho man,” said
Guerrero, adding that pol
show him doing poorly atnonj

“They do not, however, neejl
