TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE,
Calif. — Four flag-draped cof
fins bearing the bodies of four
American servicemen killed dur
ing the Vietnam War were re
turned to the United States, but
no relatives were on hand.
There was only a brief cere
mony when the plane carrying
the caskets landed Friday at Tra
vis Air Force Base after a flight
from Vietnam. Because of the
rain, the ceremony was held in a
hangar.
The Army said the caskets
contained the remains of Robert
D. Trier, Memphis, Tenn., an
Air Force major whose FI00 was
shot down over North Vietnam
Dec. 20, 1965; and Navy person
nel Donald P. Frye, Los Angeles;
William B. Jackson, Stockdale,
Texas; and Donald P. McGrane,
Waverly, Iowa.
The three sailors were lost in a
fiery crash of a Sea King rescue
helicopter operating over North
Vietnam on July 19, 1967. The
chopper flew from the USS Con
stellation.
The remains were turned over
to an American delegation in
Hanoi on Oct. 14 by Vietnamese
officials who released what they
thought were the remains of five
U.S. servicemen. The Army
laboratory in Honolulu found

that two sets of remains belonged
to one man.
Since the war ended in 1975,
the remains of 80 other Amer
icans have been returned. The
Central Identification Labora
tory also has received remains of
121 Southeast Asians at first
thought to be Americans.
Also returned on Oct. 14 were
the identity cards of three other
Americans who have been
among the 2,493. Americans
listed as missing in Vietnam, Laos
and Cambodia.
They were identified Friday as
Air Force Maj. Roosevelt Hestle
Jr., Orlando, Fla., an F105 fight
er-bomber pilot shot down over
North Vietnam July 6, 1966;
Navy Lt. j.g. Fredric Woodrow
Knapp, Huntington, N.Y., lost
Nov. 2, 1967; and Navy Lt. j.g.
Joe Russell Mossman, Spring-
field, Pa., lost Sept. 13, 1965.
Both Knapp and Mossman were
A4E pilots shot down over North
Vietnam.
