Transylvania a deadly quiet town
by United Press International
TRANSYLVANIA, La.
Although the name inspires vi
sions of vampires and ghoulish
doings, the scariest thing in this
town may be the postmaster
when he hears truckers panning
Transylvania on citizen's band
radios.
"Yep, when the truckers are
going through town and say
'don't stop in Transylvania,' I'll
growl back at 'em," said Tal-
madge Pearson, chuckling as he
adjusted his yellow cap bearing
the town's name and a black bat.
"It gives them a start some
times."
There are no macabre tales of
death in Transylvania, no un
solved mysteries, no unusual
Halloween celebrations and no
cults. In fact, there isn't much in
town other than a post office,
combination store and gasoline
station, elementary school, cot
ton gin, 200 residents and a few
homes.
But Pearson may feel like a
monster around Halloween
when he receives packets of mail
that people want him to stamp
with the postmark of this quiet
northeast Louisiana com
munity.
"I've got 10 large envelopes
filled with mail I'm going to
postmark," he said. "They send
them to me early because they
want the Transylvania post
mark. I handle about 300 extra
pieces of mail around this time."
But for the past 36 years he's
been receiving mail addressed
to Count Dracula or other
fiends, so he's used to it.
"I've been here for 36 years
and this has been going on since
then," he said. "I get three or
four cards or letters a month.
"See here, I got one just today
from Germany. It's got the re
turn address in Transylvania
that was on that TV program
'The Munsters' so they returned
it here. I'll just have to send it to
the dead letter file."
Dead is how most of the let
ters end up, but occasionally
one will come in addressed to
"postmaster" and Pearson will
open it and respond — if he feels
like it.
Meanwhile, he watches tour
ists take pictures in front of the
post office or the community's
sign to prove they were in
Transylvania.
"A lot of people stop by and
say they can't believe there's a
Transylvania," said store owner
Norman Chappell, who two
years ago began selling souve
nirs to meet the many requests
from tourists.
Transylvania is located on
Louisiana Highway 65, known
as the "River Road" because it

"All anybody arourtd here

Pearson and Chappell said
