events center plan
by Simon C. Gonzalez
Battalion Reporter
Texas A&M University is
ready for and can support a spe
cial events center, says Wesley
Peel, vice chancellor for Facili
ties Planning and Construction.
A feasibility study for a spe
cial events center is complete
and will be presented to the
Texas A&M System Board of
Regents on Nov. 21, Peel said.
The center, which would be
located behind the Penberthy
Intramural Complex, is needed
because G. Rollie White Col
iseum is too small, he said. The
seating capacity in the coliseum
is 7,500, while the special events
center would seat 15,000.
“There is a need and it’s de
sirable to have one, but there is a
problem as to how it would be
funded,” Peel said.
The center would cost $25 to
$45 million, depending on what
extras are added, he said.
“I think the board will sup
port the plans to construct a spe
cial events center subject to the
availability of financing,” Peel
said. “It all hinges on outside
financing.”
Peel doesn’t want to use
money from the Permanent
University Fund to finance the
center because that wouldn’t
leave any money for new clas
srooms.
“I don’t think the board is
ready to fund it totally from the
Permanent University Fund,”
he said, “but with support from
former students I think it will be
built.”
Peel said that for the center to
succeed, 90 to 125 event days
would have to be scheduled in
the first year. The center would
not approach the break-even
point for six or seven years.
