NEW YORK — Women
have always been accused of talk
ing too much, but at least one
group of women doesn’t talk
enough, says an expert in
teaching speaking skills to mana
gers.
“Fear of speaking in public
and an aversion to technology
are two important reasons that
surprisingly few' middle man
agement women make it to
senior management ranks,” says
Virgil Scudder. Scudder is presi
dent of MediaCom, a New York
firm that has trained more than
5,000 executives.
“Studies show that women at
all levels in business and the
community tend to be more
afraid of public speaking than
men,” Scudder says. “Particular
ly in critical areas such as job
interviews and salary negotia
tions, many women tend to
underplay their role.”
Scudder has developed a
program designed to help
women executivees overcome
their fear of public speaking. It
uses an advanced video playback
system to record and playback
their performances behind the
podium, in conference rooms
and at informal one-on-one in
terviews.
