HOUSTON — Research on a
new synthetic drug which
strengthens hearts weakened by
either chemotherapy or disease
has special meaning for the
woman monitoring the program
at Hermann Hospital in
Houston.
The new drug, amrinone, is
still in its experimental stage and
is expected to !>e reviewed by the
Fooa and Drug Administration
in late October.
But research associate Susan
Nunchuck of the Department of
Cardiology said the drug has
great promise. It has the poten
tial to strengthen and regulate
heartbeats on people who have
undergone chemotherapy for
cancer without the side effects
suffered by those taking digita
lis, a widely used heart drug.
The testing is being done by
Dr. Richard Goldstein and Dr.
Gerald Naccarelli at the Univer
sity of Texas Medical School in
Houston.
Nunchuck said the inexpen
sive digitalis, which is a natural
drug derived from the foxglove
plant and used since the days of
the Romans and Greeks more
than 2,000 years ago, sometimes
causes irregular heartbeat prob
lems in patients.
