Texas candidates quibble United Press International Texas attorney general candi dates Jim Mattox and Bill Meier swapped verbal punches Mon day over campaign contribu tions while Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, accused opponent, Senate candidate Rep, James M. Collins, R-Texas, of wavering on the Social Security issue. Mattox, Democratic nominee, told an Austin news conference his GOP opponent, Meier,“is so af raid of telling the voters the truth about his cam paign contributions that he’s trying to launder money through anothei' committee.” The committee? “Texans for a Competent Attorney Gener al,” is run by state Rep. Bob Davis, R-lrving, who was on Meier’s campaign payroll until the new committee was formed, Mattox said. “What my opponent is doing is using this committee to hide the sources of his money,” he said. “He doesn’t want the public to realize the full forces of the big special interests behind him.” Mattox said 43 percent of Meier’s contributions came from political action commit tees. Meier fired back that Mattox criticized his campaign dona tions “in order to throw up a smokescreen about his own (contribution) reports." The Republican said he was not “working directly” with the Davis committee. “Bob Davis left my campaign as finance director quite some time ago and then later formed his own group after he had re ceived numerous requests from business and political leaders to form such a group for me.” Meanwhile, in a statement re leased by his Austin of fice. Bent- sen said Collins should explain whether he agrees with the Na tional Alliance of Senior Citizens that the minimum SocialSecJ ity benefit should lie eliminai«l Collins has boasted, Bentsen, that he is backedbyll right-win ge^J o rganizaljol which has a poor record onM issue of Social Security, Collins replied that BeniPl campaign is in “pretty ' shape.” The Collins campaign ( an independent survey taken/j a Houston radio station showed Bensten trailing ini own hometown. County commissioner races marred by suit United Press International DENTON — The outcome of two county commissioner races may be in doubt even after the Nov. 2 election because of a law suit filed by six black Denton County residents. Federal Judge William Wayne Justice said Monday he would not certify results of the two elections unless the U.S. Jus tice Department approves the new voting boundaries before the election. The lawsuit filed last week alleges minority voter strength is weakened by placing predomi nantly black neighborhoods in Denton and Lewisville in diffe rent precincts. The county approved the lines last December but did not seek Justice Department approval of them until Sept. 22. Denton County is covered by the 1965 Voting Rights Act so Justice Department approval of any changes is required. In one race. Republican San dy Jacobs of Carrollton a# Democrat Charles Morris* Hebron f ace each other in W cinct 2. In the other race,Demi crat Bill Switzer of Sangel isl opposed for Precinct 4, but'w nomination under the san$S trict lines being challenged,! fiis election also is clouded. Even if the Justice DepaJ ment approves the . new line Justice will hear the federal® tentatively set' for II November.
