The wreck, which killed 62 of the 104 passengers aboard the Mittie B. Stephens in 1869, still is considered the worst river dis aster in Texas history. The Marion and Harrison County Historical Commissions decided this month that the 312- ton steamer was worth excavat ing from the silted bottom of Caddo Lake. The commissions hope to col lect about $ 15,000 to hire diving crews to explore a targeted area of the lake bottom for signs of the wreck. Another $50,000 is needed for the excavation pro ject the historians hope to begin by early next summer. “We want to excavate the steamboat for a lot of reasons, primarily to give us an insight into what life was like on a steamboat,” said Duke DeWare, a Jefferson attorney spearhead ing the effort. In the aftermath of the fire, which started in a cargo of hay on the bow of the boat, the boat’s bell and a safe full of gold were salvaged, but the remainder of the wreck was left in the lake. Richard Collins of Dallas, a Texas Historical Commission member, said search crews will look for dishes and other arti facts from the era of steamboats, which were the chief form of travel and shipping in the 1 Magnetic sur veys condi earlier this month showed n was something on ihe bon the 3,500-acre lake. BELLYDANCING FOR ANY OCCA SION, 696-1250. 12(30 LOST United Press International FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The Army’s co-ed basic training experiment is grinding to a halt this week, neither a suc cess nor a failure, but certainly a victim of the changing times. The male-female training program evolved four years ago when the Equal Rights Amend ment seemed destined to be come part of the U.S. Constitu tion and when enlistments in the all-volunteer Army were almost non-existent. But the ERA is dead. And the Army, thanks to a recession that has driven unemployment above 10 percent, is now having no problem attracting recruits, either male or female. So the 31 women of Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 3rd Training Brigade will be among the last women Thursday to close out the Army’s co-ed boot camp. After that, women will undergo training only among themselves at Fort Dix, N.J.; Fort Jackson, S.C.; and Fort McClellan, Ala. Army officials refer to the dropping of co-ed training as a change in procedure rather than the end of an experiment. “We’re going to make some thing already satisfactory, bet ter," said Col. Jerry W. Ginn, the battalion’s commander. “I think it was a proven fact that it work ed. The only thing the female sol diers can’t do right now is the same number of sit-ups, push ups or run as fast.” Ginn said most women at some point during the eight weeks of basic training discover they cannot keep up with the men. But, he noted, some Army women with athletic back grounds do challenge the men with their capabilities. “Some of them, pardon the ex pression, are jocks,” Ginn said. Lt. Duane Easley, the company commander, said the women “meet the standards” of basic training and make good soldiers, but added he is glad the men and women will again be separated at boot camp. "We can tram (women)to the standards,” he said.1 may hold back the malet reaching their potential.’ What is referred to asm lack of “upper body streifi reflected in the Army's raj merits for a score of rious categories of the pki readiness test. Ferriamicide, made and sold in Mississippi, is a diluted form of the chemical mirex, which was banned by the EPA in 1978 as a health hazard to humans and wildlife.
