Police capture
fleeing suspect
United Press International
DALLAS — Police Monday
were holding a former convict who
v shot at a policeman with the offic-
per’s weapon, then robbed,
■abducted and later released an
^elderly woman during a bizarre
i 15-hour rampage.
H Clinton Jones, 25, was cap-
P tured late Sunday in the attic
licrawl space of bis apartment,
, police said. Jones was being held
fin lieu of $100,000 bond on a
If charge of attempted capital
H murder.
Police said the incident began
■Sunday morning when officer M.
gChavarie approached a suspect,
land the suspect fled.
Chavarie said he chased the
‘ suspect, whose car crashed
^through a service station garage
door. The man then fled on foot.
As Chavarie closed on the sus-
f pect with his revolver drawn, the
suspect spun around and aimed a
small gun at him, said Chevarie.
The man then took Chavarie’s re
volver. When the officer tried to
flee he heard a shot.
Later, Mrs. James S. Miller, 75,
was confronted by a man at her
home.
She said the gunman shaved off
his moustache and beard, then
stripped and put on a girdle, a
blue dress and white shoes.
The man then ordered her into
her car. Miller said. They drove to
a shopping center, where the sus
pect released her unharmed.
“I asked him to let me out some
where where I could use a phone
to call someone to come get me,”
Miller said. “He did. He said he
would call in a few hours to let me
know where I could pick up my
car.
In the man’s apartment, police
said they found the officer’s .38-
caliber revolver, a dress and keys
to the woman’s car.

Testing shows
teacher stress
United Press International
' NEW ORLEANS — Violence,
inoise and a heavy workload are
jamong factors that lead to stress,
burnout and job dissatisfaction
iamong school teachers, according
to a test developed by two college
^professors.
The “teacher stress scale” is
believed to be the first test to mea
sure stress levels among school in-
structors. It was developed by
[Elaine G. Wangberg, associate
professor of curriculum and in
struction at the University of New
Orleans, and Justin Levitov, assis
tant professor of education at
Loyola University.
Results of stress forms com
pleted by 397 public school
teachers in Orleans and Jefferson
parishes showed elementary
teachers perceive less stress in
their overall teaching environ
ment than their secondary school
counterparts.
The tests showed that heavy
workload was a primary stress fac
tor for elementary school
teachers, while high noise levels,
an unpleasant environment and
campus violence were top areas of
stress for secondary school in
structors.
The scale measures a teacher’s
perception of the job through a
series of 75 questions. Wangberg
and Levitov, stress management
consultants, said the test is the
first to specifically apply to educa
tional settings.
Wangberg added that the scale
could lead to improvements in
working conditions, professional
status, compensation and public
support for teachers.

The record speaks for itself. Steve Smith has a much broader background in the law,
considerably more experience in County Court at law (in both criminal and civil cases), more
seasoning in contested matters and a record of public service to community.
The Judge of the County Court of Law is not an extension of the prosecutor’s office. It is a place
for the citizens as a whole and as individuals to find justice. The person who sits as judge needs
to be well versed, fair and experienced. Steve Smith is best qualified to hold this important
office. We ask for your vote and support.
