United Press International
HOUSTON — The head of
Space Services Inc., the corpora
tion that successfully launched
the nation’s first private rocket
said he believes Vice President
George Bush’s support for the
project was a reflection of the
administration’s position.
Bush held a private meeting
Saturday with David Hannah
Jr., chairman of the Houston-
based Space Services Inc., which
successfully launched a Con
estoga I rocket on a suborbital
test flight from Matagorda Is
land Sept. 9.
Bush spokesmen would not
disclose what was said atthepn-
vate meeting, but said, “It was
strictly a personal visit. They’ve
been longtime friends.”
Hannah, however, said Bush
believes the nation needs more
private effort in areas previousl)
run by government.
“I think that he’s been most
sympathetic to the concept ol
the private sector in the rocket
business, which I think is a re
flection of the administration
position,” Hannah said.
“It was just great. He’sbeena
long supporter of ours, not that
he supported the progratt
financially but just to givegooc
words of encouragement.”
Hannah said Space Services
Inc., needed at least $15 million
to go forward with a full-scale
program. The company hah
raised $6 million mostly among
Hannah’s friends, before the
Conestoga I launch.
Meanwhile, Hannah saic
Space Services Inc., was going
forward with plans for a seconc
launch, likely an attempt to orbit
a test payload, in September
1984.
