The spokesman said the operations would not be tried until later this month when Dr. Denton Cooley and his associ ates return from a scientific meeting in Athens, Greece. Cooley, surgeon-in-chief of the institute, and Dr. Barry D. Kahan, director of the organ transplant program at the Uni versity of Texas Medical School at Houston, are cooperating in a proposed series of 35 heart transplants to test the effective ness of Cyclosporine, a drug which promises to reduce the chance of patients’ rejecting their new organs. A 43-year-old man who re ceived a new heart July 5 and a 45-year-old woman who re ceived a transplant on Aug. 5 were the first two patients to participate in the program. Both are reported in good medical condition. The woman left the hospital within three weeks of surgery, but the male patient remained in St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital following an emergency gall bladder operation. “The woman recipient con tinues to make good progress,” St. Luke’s spokeswoman Cindy Katz said. “She returns to the hospital once a week for thor ough tests and evaluation but so far the physicians involved say they are extremely pleased with •her condition.” •t'. : G.G Every day is Special at TUESDAY NIGHT 5-9 P.M.
