Carl Wickizer, engineering anager of the Shell Oil Co.’s offshore division, said Wednes day that while he understood enviromental concerns, offshore drillers have a good re- ord of protecting the land. “Certainly, people think of anta Barbara,” he said, refer- ing to the 1969 oil spill into the anta Barbara Channel from an ffshore rig. “But we have a roven safety record. Most of he accidents since then have ieen from (oil) tankers.” David King, vice president of perations for Zapata OffShore, | oil rig manufacturer, said iccidents like February’s sinking f the oil rig Ocean Ranger off he Canadian coast are rare. “However, when an accident oes occur in the industry, such is the Ocean Ranger, it can be ipectacular,” he said. “The tean Ranger, accident is not a ;ood reason to restrict or pro- ibit offshore drilling. Very re- onsive actions have been and will continue to be taken to pre- ent accidents of this riature iom recurring.” Claude Golay, manager for jenvironmental and regulatory matters for Chevron USA, said offshore drilling is needed be cause oil supplies in American fields almost will be depleted by the year 2000 and oil imports can be threatened by political turmoil. “These next 25 to 30 years will be a transitional period,” he said. “But the gap between now until then must be bridged with new discoveries of domestic oil and gas. Where will we find these major new U.S. oil fields? At least 25 to 40 percent will be offshore.” ONE HOUR COLOR FILM Fast Hour FBtWJ ) S 2t‘ : SAVE *2.00 ONCOLOR^ FILM DEVELOPING AND PRINTING One coupon per roll-C-41 Process only not good with other coupons.
