Aggie Ladies trounce SHSU, win tournament
by John P. Lopez
Battalion Staff
If the Texas A&M women’s vol
leyball team keeps playing like it
did Saturday in the Texas A&M
Invitational, the Aggie Ladies
should find themselves in Cali
fornia playing for the NCAA na
tional championship in De
cember.
Head Coach Terry Condon
made it clear prior to the start of
the 1982 season that her goal
was to make the national tourna- 1
ment. Her players made it dear
to Sam Houston State that their
goal was the same.
The Aggie Ladies trounced
the Bearkats 15-3, 15-6, 15-3 in
Saturday’s final to take the first-
place trophy and improve their
season record to 5-0.
Texas A&M reached the
championship game by posting
victories over the Bearkats, St.
Phillips and Southwestern, but
did not play as impressively in
the preliminaries as in the final
match.
“I think we were just getting
tired,” Condon said of the
matches leading to the cham
pionship.
Fatigue was evident in the
Aggie Ladies’ final preliminary
match against Southwestern as
they jumped out to early leads,
but had to ward off comebacks
in all three games.
In the third game of the

match, Texas A&M led South
western 9-2 and seemed to be
cruising toward the champion
ship match but the Aggie Ladies
tired and let Southwestern catch
up to make the game closer.
Condon utilized all but two of
the players on the Texas A&M
roster to keep fresh players in
the game and beat Southwestern
15-10.
In the championship match,
however, the Aggie Ladies did
not show any signs of tiring.
Texas A&M easily defeated the
Bearkats behind strong play by
Jennifer Giese, Joey Vrazel, Lisa
Johnson and Sherri Brinkman.
The foursome played well
together combining for most of
the Aggie Ladies’ points in the
match. Lesha Beakley, Linda
Clausen and Sue Wetzel also
performed well setting and
blocking for the Aggie Ladies.
Texas A&M’s next two match
es will be Wednesday against the
University of Texas at Arlington
and Friday against Lamar. The
Aggie Ladies then travel to Lin
coln, Neb., for their biggest test
thus far when they play in the
Nebraska Tournament. All of
the teams in that tournament
were nationally ranked last year.
