A&M starts season with tournament sweep
Stoll, McDonald pick up four
victories as Aggies start at 8-0
by Frank L. Christlieb
Sports Editor
A national championship just
wasn’t enough.
After winning the Association
for Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women crown during May, the
Aggie women’s softball team still
hasn’t placed a foot on the
brake. By the same token, Coach
Bob Brock’s squad refuses to lift
its foot (or feet, collectively)
from the accelerator that raced
it to an 84-9 record last year.
Texas A&M opened the
1982-83 season by sweeping
eight games of its own Aggie In
vitational in Bryan’s Travis Park
Friday and Saturday. In so
doing, the Aggies extended
their current winning streak to
15 games, dating back to the
seven straight games they won in
earning the national title over
three months ago.
Utilizing every player avail
able, Brock made the loss of last
year’s five seniors — Shannon
Murray, Maria Resendez, Karen
Guerrero, Melody Pritchard
and Mary Lou Youngblood —
seem unimportant. So talented
is this year’s group of freshmen
that Brock platooned his entire
roster throughout the course of
the tournament.
“I’m really pleased,” Brock
said. “We started out a little slow.
We’ve been working real hard
and we’ve been trying to get all
the newcomers going.
“The bench was just marve
lous. Whenever I put them in
they did a great job.”
As if the team needs more
speed to add to last season’s re
cord of 131 stolen bases, Brock
said: "We’re a lot faster team.
We stole quite a few bases this
weekend and stretched a lot of
hits into extra-base hits. I think
our top six spots in the order are
the fastest bunch in the nation.”
Those top six spots include
freshmen Cindy Foster and Cin
dy Cooper, along with Iva Jack-
son, Josie Carter, Patti Holthaus
and Carrie Austgen. Last year as
a junior, Austgen led the team
with 24 steals.
“I’m pretty positive about it,”
Brock said. “There aren’t any
real big negatives, except that we
have a few things to mold
together.”
In the tourney opener, the
Aggies shut out Texas Tech 2-0,
as All-America Lori Stoll threw a
three-hitter and struck out 13.
Texas A&M scored its runs in
the eighth inning, when Foster
and Jackson singled, and Carter
followed with a two-run triple.
Texas A&M topped Baylor 3-
0 in Friday’s next game. In the
first inning, Foster and Cooper
singled and Jackson brought
home a run on a double. Holth
aus’ RBI single in the third
scored Carter from second base,
and Austgen’s triple gave the
Aggies’ their final run.
Shan McDonald pitched a
four-hitter and picked up five
strikeouts, as Jackson ended the
game 2-for-4 and Austgen had
two hits in three trips to the
plate.
Texas A&M defeated Sam
Houston State, the NAIA run
ners-up last season, 7-0 in the
Aggies’ third game of the day, as
Stoll pitched a three-hitter and
struck out eight. In the first in
ning, a walk to Foster, a sacrifice
by Cooper, a walk to Jackson
and an error on SHSU seconc
baseman Pat Mulcahey allowec
a run to score.

Patti Holthaus, second baseman for the
Aggie softball team, connects with a
pitch during the championship game
of the Aggie Invitational Saturday at
Travis Park in Bryan. The Aggies won
eight straight games in their opening
action of the 1982-83 season, extending
their winning streak to 15 games.
The Texas A&M rifle team,
taking part in its first-ever out-
door prone competition, won
the state championship in Fort
Worth Saturday and Sunday.
Competing in three stages of
shooting — from 50 ykrds, 50
meters and 100 yards — the
Aggies took top honors in four-
man and two-man events, and
won several individual awards as
well.
Winning the state four-man
team trophy were Chris Fedun,
Glenn Park, John Berry and
Robert Crowe, scoring 1,542
points out of a possible 1,600. In
the state two-man event, Ben
Potter and team captain Todd
Woodard won the event by
shooting 796 of a possible 800.
Park and Fedun placed second
in the event, shooting 792.
In individual events, which
include metallic sight and any
sight competitions, Ellen Ross of
Houston won by compiling
1,597 of 1,600 points. From
Texas A&M, Troy Smith won
the unclassified master event
with a score of 1,563, while Pot
ter placed third in the expert
category with 1,589.
Woodard finished second in
the sharpshooter class with
1,585 and Fedun placed first in
the junior class with 1,581.
Crowe placed third in thejunior
class with a total of 1,567.
In thejunior marksman class,
which includes competitors
under 20 years of age, Berry was
first with 1,564 and Park
finished third with a score of
1,551.
In the any sights category,
Woodard placed third at 1,597.
Here are other top Texas
A&M scores:
Smith, unclassified master —
1,582
Potter, expert — 1,596
Overall, Potter placed ninth
in the state and Woodard
finished as the No. 10 shooter.
Woodard said it’ll be hard to
forget Potter’s performance.
“Ben amazed nye today,” he
said. “He shot eight perfect sets
of targets — 80 perfect shots —
he cleaned the dewar course and
the 50-yard course.”
Dewar competition features
20 shots at 50 yards and 20 shots
at 100 yards.
“We had some really goot
performances,” Woodard said
“Not just good scores, but good
solid, technically sound per
formances. We weren’t used to
shooting perfect scores, and to
day, many of us saw 10 after 10
after 10.”
The team, whose adviser is
Maj. Richard M. Pitts, will com
pete in the Texas air rifle chain-'
pionsliipj*». this weekend in Fort
Worth.
