It needs only a modest initial investment, is a good way to stay in shape and can drastically cut the expenses of getting to and from work. Most commuters find a bicy cle costs only a small fraction of the price of a car since it doesn't depreciate greatly, needs no fuel or insurance requires minimal maintenance and costs nothing to park. A 10-mile trip to work will take about an hour. An auto drive through rush-hour traffic and a search for a parking place can take longer. So can waiting for a bus. For bikeriding however. Good equipment is needed. In expensive bikes may sound like good deals, but a buyer is better off with a better 10-speed at a price of $200-plus. Commuting bicycles general ly are heavier and more durable to withstand potholes and rail road tracks. Sport bikes are lighter. Prices range up to $2,500 for racers, so the use should be considered when a bicycle is purchased. Going to a bicycle shop will help guarantee getting the right bike and that it will fit. A shop also gives expert advice on all aspects of bicycling. Certain accessories are essen tial too. Most important are lights, either permanent ones powered by a generator driven by the bicycle wheel, or clamp- on types powered by batteries. Unless the bike can be taken into a secure area, a strong cable and lock are needed. Cutting corners by buying a thin cable and an inadequate lock can be costly. A helmet will protect the head in the event of an accident or fall. Several styles are available at a cost of $35 to $40. A wide variety of racks and bags are sold to carry work pap ers or a change of clothing back and forth. Needs and habits de termine which ones are added. Commuting styles vary. Some people ride slowly in the same clothes worn at work. Others, who have access to a shower — push hard — cleaning up and changing clothes at their des tination. While more bikeways are being built, bicyclists must coex ist with motorists on the roads and that means being careful. The biggest error is regarding a bicycle as a toy, riding it on sidewalks, erratically or against traffic. Licensed in some areas, bicycles are vehicles and come under the same rules of the road as cars. Bicyclists have special prob lems in rain — they get soaked and their brakes hardly work. Many revert to a bus or car on stormy days. Others throw on raingear and grit their teeth. Some hardy souls commute by bicycle all year, even in the frigid weather of the upper Mid west and New England. Others put their bikes away for a few months and go back to the bus or car. But they still try to stay in shape for spring. Rollers permit ting a regular bike to be used as a stationary exercise bike can be purchased, and there is a pro liferation of exercise bikes on the market. Exercise bikes can be set up in front of a television set. Some riders even read a book while pedaling these. Like the road counterparts, cheap exercise bikes often don't hold up under prolonged use. It's better to pay more and get the extra durability and quality. If a rider doesn't like the high handlebars, wide seat and spe cial pedals of exercise bikes, modifications can be made. A Schwinn exercise bike, costing $250, can be modified with regu lar pedals, toe-clips, drop hand lebars and a regular bike seat at an additional cost of about $60. To function efficiently, bicy cles — both road bikes and those meant for stationary exercise — have to fit and be adjusted prop erly. Seats should be high enough so the leg almost straightens out on the down- stroke. A seat that is too low puts excessive force on the knee. Gears are designed to provide a mechanical advantage. Proper cycling technique is to keep the pedal revolutions at 80 to 90 a minute, rather than trying to go everywhere in high gear. Fitness by bicycling comes slower than by more intense activities. A bicyclist has to cov er 25 miles in an hour to con sume the same 1,000 calories burned by someone who runs 10 miles. Covering 25 miles in an hour is difficult, except for competi tive cyclists. Speeds of up to 40 mph have been achieved for ex tremely short distances on tracks, but 30 mph is considered the maximum for a bicycle over a mile course. Wind and rolling resistance are limiting factors. BOY, I WOULDN'T TOUCH HIM WITH A T£Af FOOT POLE? Wednesday 3:30 CBN ★★★Vi "Magnificent Doll” (1946) Ginger Rogers, David Niven.
