Ki, a smartly colored sparrow hawk, has single-mindedly selected Mrs. Melichar, a Boise artist, as his chosen mate and does not wish to share her. Three rooms in the Melichar home have been turned into a hospital for wounded, maimed and crippled birds. Ki is one of the patients. He was found starving beside a roadway about five years ago. He is imprinted — or "thinks of himself as a person" — Mrs. Melichar said, and isn't capable of surviving in the wild. "He doesn't know what to hunt, where to hunt or how to hunt," she said. "He doesn't know any of the taboos of bird- dom. He thinks of himself as hu man. So, when mating season comes around. I'm his mate." In 1974, Mrs. Melichar, already a well-known local pain ter, received her first bird, a sick burrowing owl. She took the bird to a Meridian, Idaho, veter inarian, J.C. Lee. "He said if I wanted to keep it as a pet, he'd get me the permits as long as I'd take in a few birds. It all started out with me and a few birds." But very quickly Mrs. Melichar, equipped with state and federal permits, filled a room with bird cages, then the three rooms — and now cages even adorn a counter near her clothes washer and dryer as more and more people bring wounded or abandoned birds to the makeshift hospital. "You never know what I'll have by the end of the day," Mrs. Melichar said as she walked through the cage-lined room that once was her artist's studio. "They'll get me up at 6 a.m. with a wounded bird and, at 11p.m., they'll still be coming in." Neighborhood children turn over an owl wounded by a B-B gun, loggers worried about an abandoned baby owl knock on her door — and frantic mothers come with their children in tow, laden with what once were two family pets that now have hatch ed their own family of cooing doves. Each day the Melichars buy a fresh beer liver and chop the organ into worm-shaped chunks of meat. By hand, Mrs. Melichar pops the "pseudo eyes. She spreads antibiotic lotion on their wounds, wraps a broken wing or soothes a ner vous newcomer, cooing and talking quietly. "A lot of them die and a lot of them get well and are released," she said as she petted a wide- eyed owl injured by a bullet. Certain birds that can't be re leased Mrs. Melichar keeps as "host" birds. In each cage, an old-timer at the hospital stays with new deliveries, she said, because a calm bird tends to help quiet the others. And with each arrival comes another patient — another chal lenge for Mrs. Melichar. Ki lands on Mrs. Melichar's head and tries to feed her. He jealously drives other humans from the room, scraping their scalps with his beak if they ha ven't donned one of the straw hats Mrs. Melichar keeps on hand for the protection of her guests. "He builds a nest for us, and begs and begs for me to come to him," Mrs. Melichar said, with Ki perched on her finger. What does Charles Melichar think of having a bedroom, bathroom, his wife's art studio — and even part of the utility room — turned over to feath ered creatures? "He's patient," Mrs. Melichar said. "And, he's quite helpful. But I try not to take advantage of his good nature." monday specials EVENING 7:00 0 THE MIND OF FRITZ LIEBER Fritz Lieber shares his insights on writing, human nature and the future that awaits us all. 8:00 (D TONIGHT.
