It Ms. Jayroe may not have the national name recognition of the first two, but she has firmly established herself in the Dallas- Fort Worth market the last two years as anchor of the week- night newscasts on KXASTV, an NBC affiliate. Sixteen years after the shy 19- year-old Miss Oklahoma was crowned Miss America 1967, she freely acknowledged that without the title, "1 probably would not have had the oppor tunity to be where I am today.” "When I was young there were no women on TV so there were no role models,” she said. ”If I were in high school today it (a television career) would be very clear to me. But, when I was in high school, your choices were to be a teacher or a nurse, which are both very fine profes sions, but limiting.” She first came to Fort Worth after two years of anchoring the news at Oklahoma City's KOCO-TV. She was thrust somewhat un expectedly before the cameras in the late 1970s. She was working for the Okla homa Department of Education when she had an opportunity to co-host with Art Linkletter a 12- E art educational series that was roadcast in 16 states. At the time she was newly divorced and rearing a month-old son. After the series with Linklet ter, she did a twice-weekly pub lic television program on educa tion for the Department of Edu cation. That brought her to the attention of KOCO, which de cided she suited the image the station wanted to project. She never had worked on a news program before her April 4, 1978, debut. "I was scared to death,” she recalled. "When I was hired, I thought I would be trained. I wasn't. They hired me and were going to put me on the air two weeks later," she said. "I took a giant risk. I could have just been a fool. But I wasn't. And I haven't been because I've worked hard at being a good news anchor.” 2:05(1) ★★★ “A Dandy In Aspic” (1968) Laurence Harvey, Mia Far row.
