Fort Worth hosts
cutting horse show
United Press International
FORT WORTH — In a city
dubbed “Cowtown,” the value of
a good cutting horse is well
known.
Cutting horses are trained to
isolate one animal from a herd
on the range. The action re
quires the horse to shift quickly
back and forth to screen the cow
from the herd and many times
to anticipate the movement of
the cow.
Today, top cutting horses are
involved in competition as much
as actual ranch work.
“Cutting horse competitions
are quickly becoming the richest
of all the equine sports,” said
Zack Wood, secretary-treasurer
of the National Cutting Horse
Association.
The NCHA was founded in
Fort Worth in 1946 by a group
of ranchers seeking to advance
the prestige of the cutting horse.
The group now has members in
49 states.
NCHA will hold a derby at
Will Rogers Coliseum beginning
today. Some 312 4-year-old
horses are entered in the com
petition which has a purse of
$266,000, the largest in the
show’s 12-year history.
The winner will collect
$63,000
money.
