Christlieb Sports Editor Doug Flutie watched from the sideline as the Penn State Nit- tany Lions rolled up a 31-0 lead over his Boston College team mates during the fourth game of the 1981 season. Fellow quarterback John Loughery, a First-string quarter back who had completed one of 15 passes for Five yards during the first three quarters, couldn’t move the Eagles downField. Af ter watching that scene through out most of the game, Coach Jack Bicknell made his best move of the year. He sent Flutie, a freshman, into the game to replace Loughery. Most people ex pected Flutie, the fourth-string quarterback entering the sea son, to fumble his First snap, to stumble while handing off to one of his backs or to throw an interception deep in Eagle terri tory. But Flutie stayed calm, passed for 135 yards and threw a touch down pass — all in one quarter. Although the Eagles lost 38-7, Flutie had won the starting quarterback job by virtue of his performance in those 12 mi nutes of play. While Loughery had been the starter entering the season, juniors Dennis Scala and Doug Guyer had been the second- and third-stringers until getting in jured during the first part of the season. Flutie made the Penn State trip as the third-string quarterback, but had no idea he’d get a chance to take his first snap in college football. “Guyer hadn’t done that well during the first of the season.” Flutie said, “so after Loughery had a poor game, they put me in. I guess being in the situation I was in, there was no pressure on me. I thought that if I did well, great, and if I didn’t, people wouldn’t really care because it wasn’t expected.” Eagle QB Doug Fluti With Boston College losing to Navy 23-10 in his first start, Flu tie completed 14 of 25 passes for 118 yards with one interception. In game, Boston College outga Pitt offensively 415-405. “1 was pleased with my formance, but there were things we could have done ter to win the game,” Flutie said. “The team played well that day, and I happened to be throwing the ball and w’e racked up some points.” The Eagles, who trailed 20-10 at halftime, missed chances to win the game when they fum bled with a first-and-goal situa tion at the 8-yard line. Boston College also couldn't capitalize on a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line, and missed a field goal in the process. The Eagles won four of their final five games, while Flutie passed for 234, 251, 244, 201 and 122 yards, along« touchdowns.
