The Gulf Coast was spared
life-threatening and property
damaging hurricanes in 1981.
Weather experts say that was
unusual and it should not lull
residents into a feeling of non
chalance.
“We usually have two hit us
somewhere (each year),” said
Gilbert Clark, a hurricane fore
caster with the National Hurri
cane Center in Miami.
In both 1886 and 1933, four
hurricanes struck the Texas
coast.
The Gulf Coast also has been
spared so far this year. Clark
fears the death toll could mount
in a future major hurricane be
cause many people never have
experienced a severe storm.
“What we’re afraid of is the

cane is. They may think it’s not
worth the bother (to evacuate).”
Clark said a person might live
on the coast 50 years and never
be in one of the areas that re
ceive the most damage, but the
person also could be hit twice.
He said coastal residents should
have a plan and should heed
warnings.
“It’s like an insurance policy,”
Clark said. “You may not ever
use it, but it’s good to have.”
The U.S. city which is most
likely to be hit is Miami, where a
hurricane is expected every
seven years, Clark said.
“The middle Gulf Coast —
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama
— is the next prone area,” he
said.
The chance of any particular
50-mile area in those states
being hit is once every 10 to 12
years.
The Texas coast is the third
most likely place. The average
there is once every 15 years.
