The discovery of a fertile
medfly last week in California
has caused some concern among
Texas agricultural officials, but
they have not yet taken any ex
traordinary steps to protect the
state.
David Ivie, director of agri
cultural and environmental ser
vices for the Texas Department
of Agriculture, says Texas is bet
ter prepared to deal with any
potential infestation than it was
a year ago.
The medfly found in Califor
nia last week was the first one
discovered on the West Coast
since November 1981, and
Texas officials are relieved there
was not a major spring outbreak
of the flies in California.
