United Press International FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Two researchers who studied 170 married couples have come to a rather startling conclusion — arm length is important to marital bliss. The scientists say couples with similarly sized forearms en joy better chances for domestic harmony than partners whose arms don’t match. The best candidate for a Suicide (continued from page 1) things to start happening to him — like insomnia, loss of appetite and falling grades.” Birch suggested several warn ing signals to watch for in deter mining if a student is seriously contemplating suicide. “Contrary to the old wive’s tale, people who talk about it are the people who do it,” he said. “In roughly three-quarters of the cases, people will broadcast ahead of time to someone that they’re going to commit suicide. “It’s not unusual for college students to come in and talk ab out hurting themselves. But, there are three questions you can ask a person that will give you a quick idea of how serious he is and those questions are how, when and where.” Asking a person how or where he plans to kill himself may be a probability indicator because a specific answer can show that some obvious plan ning has occurred, he said. If a person starts putting time limits on a situation, that could be another indication of serious suicidal thoughts. “There’s a difference in the student who says, ‘If my re lationship with my girlfriend doesn’t clear up in about two weeks, I just can’t take it any more,’ as opposed to the student who doesn’t specify a time frame,” he said. Should the person give any concrete answers, there could be a serious problem and he should get professional help as soon as possible. Birch said the PCS works with the Department of Student Affairs to give seminars to help train resident advisers about stress signals and dealing with emotionally depressed students. Each resident adviser, as well as each faculty member, receives a pamphlet containing informa tion abc tion about stress, the PCS and how to properly refer a student. “The big thing for the resi dence hall adviser is to take the time to be aware of the people on the floor,” he said. “There are signs; you see people who are generally very outgoing and suddenly, they aren’t. The RA needs to know to be able to take the time and know what changes in behavior to look for and know how to properly refer the student. “If there’s ever a crisis or emergency, get the student to the health center. That’s the logistical, number one thing, be cause the health center can call us. If it’s a crisis, which usually means a threat to life, they’re there to get the medical atten tion to preserve life. “For emergencies and crises, I have a person on duty every morning and afternoon who has no appointments, who is simply there waiting to respond to a cri sis. And then at night, the senior staff is on call for emergencies.” The counselors at the PCS work with suicidal students by looking at alternatives and help ing the student to put his prob lems into perspective. Together, the student and counselor work to find the cause of the stress and some way of alleviating it. “Some students come in already with some emotional problems and then you heap all this academic stress on top of it and the demands that the Uni versity makes on performance here, and you’re sitting with a boiling pot of problems you can almost predict is going to ex plode,” he said. Birch said sometimes it’s bet ter for the student to withdraw from the University, seek pro fessional help elsewhere and, af ter finding a way to deal with the problem, return to school. “There isn’t any college de gree I know of that’s worth kill ing yourself for,” he said. Texas image sells British candy United Press International DALLAS — A British candy manufacturer is selling the Old West image to market a candy bar named after the Lone Star state. “The cowboy image has al ways been popular in England, particularly Wild West films,” said Peter Tuss, marketing assis tant for the Rowntree, MacKin- tosh Co. of York, England, which manufactures the Texan candy bar. Tuss is trying to sell his pro duct with the Old West image. “The advertising campaign is one based on the Wild West in America, hence the name Tex an. When we think of the Wild West, we think of Texas and the desert and things like that.” Picture the tough and fear less cowboy being tied to the stake by wild Indians, who give him one last request before adding another scalp to their collection. Instead of asking for a cigarette or shot of whiskey, he asks for a Texan. But the cowboy takes so long to chew it, the Indians get bored and ride off in the sunset. It may not be the ending to tonight’s late show, but it is the advertisment Britons see for the Texan candy bar. The candy bar sells for 15 pence (about 30 cents), and has been on the market in Britain since 1975. The British eat ab out 700 tons a year of the 3-inch- long chocolate nougat bar that comes in an orange wrapper with a picture of a cowboy and an American flag. The candy bar is not available in the United States. T-S-O Prescriptions Filled Glasses Repaired BRYAN 216 N.
