In Janu ary, it became the fifth operat ing cancer ’ hotline in the country. The need, says Moore, is im mense. “In Tarrant County alone, an average of nine new cancer pa tients are diagnosed every day,” he said. “If we can make half of those aware we exist, that will be a real service.” “I’m not sure what it was I said that helped the fellow, but what ever it was, it helped, because two weeks later, he called back. That’s what we’re about.” The Tarrant County prog ram is patterned after the ori ginal cancer hotline in Kansas City established by Richard Bloch, co-founder of the H&R Block tax preparation chain. Moore conferred with Bloch before beginning work on the Tarrant County program and Bloch, who founded the Kansas City program after recovering from what had been diagnosed as terminal lung cancer, recently addressed volunteers in Fort Worth. filings are lommunit foration in |jer town, Iren’t laug I They’re the place i; ' Sightin;. The goal of the Tarrant County program, and similar projects in Little Rock, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., and Gainesvil le, Fla., is to help people cope with the sudden, shattering emotional and mental realities of a cancer diagnosis. “Many patients are too afraid to take the treatments,” Moore said. “They are not aware that many people are alive because they took the treatments. “Most people equate cancer with death.
