SEATTLE — The fielding of
A1 Cowens and Dave Henderson
didn’t make Jim Beattie’s job
easy, but the Seattle outfielders
made it even tougher on the
Texas Rangers.
Cowens and Henderson let a
fly ball by Doug Flynn drop be
tween them for a three-base
error in the fourth inning, but
they atoned for their mistake by
belting solo homers as Seattle
blanked the Rangers 4-0 Mon
day night.
“Obviously, they both felt
pretty badly because they both
came back with home runs,” said
Beattie, who earned his third
straight victory for the streaking
Mariners.
The right hander went six
innings, allowing only three hits
and striking out six before leav
ing with stiffness in his shoulder.
“Getting out of the tight
situations took a lot out of me,”
he acknowledged. “I just got
tired.”

Here's how it's done
Beattie worked out of the
fourth-inning jam by getting
Buddy Bell to pop out, striking
out Johnny Grubb and forcing
Jim Sundberg to hit a lazy infield
pop. He also had to work out of a
jam in the fifth when Larry Par
ish singled and second baseman
Julio Cruz committed an error
on a grounder by Mark Wagner.
Although Beattie’s record
stands at just 3-4 for the season,
his ERA is now 2.61, fourth best
in the American League.
Reliever Mike Stanton
finished out the game in style for
Beattie, hurling three innings of
hitless ball to pick up his fourth
save.

better with a few runs under
their belt.
Astros leadoff batters Denny
Walling and Terry Puhl pro
vided Niekro a third-inning lead
Monday and the knuckleballing
right handed pitcher held the
Atlanta Braves in check en route
to a 9-0 victory.
Houston’s run total and hit
total (15) were season bests, indi
cating it hasn’t been often that
the struggling Astros have par
leyed daring baserunning, free
swinging and power pitching in
a game.
The glue holding those ing
redients together was “getting
runs on the board early,” Niekro
said.
“I think I’ve been pitching
well all year,” he added. “Except
for one Chicago game when I
gave up four runs in four in
nings, I’ve held the other club in
check. And that’s what I’m sup
posed to do.”
Lack of offense behind Niek
ro has caused him to have only a
6-4 record despite his having
had the third best earned run
average in the National League
(2.30). He pitched a five-hitter
Monday, leaving no room for
doubt about who would win this
one.
Atlanta Manager Joe Torre
generalized his team’s failings.
“The only thing that hap
pened tonight is that we got the
stuff kicked out of us,” he said.
To Niekro’s liking, the foot
work started early. Tony Scott
and Dickie Thon, the Nos. 7 and
8 hitters, combined for six hits.
Each singled to open the third
inning and Niekro sacrificed
them up a base.
Walling’s sacrifice fly to cen
ter drove in Scott and — as it
turned out — made a loser out
