LANSING, Mich. — The
Michigan Court of Appeals has
ruled an unwed father-to-be is
entitled to attend the birth of his
child, despite hospital rules that
limit attendance in the delivery

The decision, released Mon
day, means Edward Coch will be
able to accompany his girl
friend, Karen Whitman, when
she delivers their baby — ex

Coch and Whitman, who
attended childbirth classes
together, filed suit against Mer
cy-Memorial Hospital because it
refused to allow unmarried
fathers-to-be into the delivery
room.
In its ruling, the three-judge
appeals panel said Coch had

LOS ANGELES — A grand
mother, 75, convicted of smug
gling cocaine has been sent
enced to three years in prison by
a federal judge who called it a
message to drug traffickers they
cannot use the elderly as
couriers.
U.S. District Judge Terry
Hatter Jr. Monday ignored the
recommendation of probation
officials to give Heliodora Saenz
a one-year sentence despite her
attorney’s contention three
years “equates to a life sentence
for her.”
She is believed to be the old
est woman prosecuted in
history by the local U.S.
ney’s office.
Prosecutor James
argued the grandmother o(!
a Colombian national with
previous arrest record, po!
threat to society.
“She brings narcotics in
where her grandchildrens
come in touch with them,
your children and minerai|
Walsh said.
Judge Hatter said: “Itisa
situation in a society thathasl
respect for its elders. That
little doubt this woman has
used.”
