Larkin Battalion Reporter Discipline cases against Texas A&M students reached a Uni versity high of 193 in March, according to figures released by Bill Kibler, assistant director of Student Affairs. Kibler said 138 of the cases dealt with excessive parking tickets and 55 were general dis cipline cases. The previous high was 100 cases in May 1981. April figures showed a de crease with a total of 150 addi tional discipline cases being re viewed by the Student Affairs office. Kibler said the number of general discipline cases hand led, 101 for March and April, was a significant increase com pared to previous semesters. University discipline cases are divided into two areas: park ing violations, for students who have over 10 tickets issued to them; and general discipline cases, for students who violate any of the University’s rules and regulations. The stu dent may pay the tickets within three days and face no disciplin ary action or may arrange for a hearing with Kibler to discuss why the problem with the tickets occurred and what will be done to solve it. Students who are repeatedly brought before the Student Affairs office face a number of disciplinary actions, including the possibility of expulsion from the University. Expulsion for not paying parking tickets has happened in the past, Kibler said. Kibler said no classification of students at Texas A&M stands out as a leader in the number of discipline cases taken against them, but that early guidance given to freshman might help prevent abuse of the Universi ty’s rules and regulations. “If all our freshman could have fish camp experience it would help,” he said. “A student needs an adjustment period.” Kibler said he feels the Uni versity discipline system is fair and effective. “The disciplinary process we have is a good one,” he said. “When we are through we feel that we have had a good educa tional impact. “We try from the beginning to treat each case individually. For three cases of the same type of offense, we might give out three different punishments.” Kibler cited three factors as reasons why students violate University rules: drinking, peer pressure and a subconscious de sire to take a risk.
