Three officers have died in
the line-of-duty in 1982, two in
traffic accidents and one shot by
a suspect, spokesman Larry
Troutt said. Another three traf
fic deaths involved off-duty
officers and another off-duty
officer was shot accidentally by
his partner, he said.

the Justice Department Monday
that Houston led the nation in
line-of-duty deaths this year.

to draw any conclusions or make
any major changes in response
to the upsurge in officer deaths,

Texas Tech University falls vic

Dr. Henry Wright said Mon
day that Texas Tech was in se
rious danger of losing the Great
Plains Wildlife Research Labor
atory, a government funded
project that studies wintering
areas used by migrating birds.
He said if the lab is lost, the
primary effect would be the eli
mination of research on area

the lab’s research on pheasants
has resulted in simple, inexpen
sive and effective habitat man
agement plans.
“Since wildlife leases increase
in value every year and farm in
