SEATTLE — Seattle has out-
scored the San Antonio Spurs
417-408 in the first four games
of their best-of-seven playoff
series. But the hard-pressed Su
perSonics are just one loss away
from elimination.
The two teams play Game 5
of the NBA quarterfinal series
tonight in Seattle’s Kingdome.
The winner of the senes will
meet the Los Angeles Lakers,
who swept Phoenix, in a best-of-
seven playoff for the Western
Conference championship.
San Antonio has built its com
manding 3-1 lead on the basis of
two-point victories in Games 1,3
and 4. Seattle had a compara
tively easy 114-99 win over the

Spurs in Game 2.
The Spurs apparently are be
nefiting from a week of inten
sive workouts in El Paso while
Seattle was disposing of Hous
ton in a three-game playoff
mini-series. San Antonio center
George Johnson said the Spurs
spent quite a bit of time practic
ing late-game situations during
their workouts.
“Seattle is a fine team — I
don’t think they really crumble,”
said Johnson. “It’s just a matter
of which team makes fewer mis
takes.
“Overall they’ve made fewer
mistakes. But when it comes
down to the stretch, that’s when
they’ve been making their mis
takes and not doing the things
you have to do to win ball
games.”
George Gervin and Mike
Bratz hit game-winning shots
with seconds left in Games 1 and
3 for the Spurs while Dave Cor-
zine’s free throws and rebound
ing down the stretch helped San
Antonio take Game 4.
San Antonio’s clutch play in
the series may help the Spurs
shake off their reputation for
choking in the playoffs. Coming
into the matchup with Seattle,
the Spurs had won just one of six
playoff series since joining the
NBA in 1977.
One of San Antonio’s classic
folds occurred in the 1979 East
ern Conference finals when the
Spurs held a 3-1 advantage over
the Washington Bullets but lost
the next three in a row.
One of the key San Antonio
additions is the most recent —
small forward Mike Mitchell,
who was acquired from Cleve
land in a mid-season trade.
Mitchell has outscored his coun
terpart for the Sonics, Wally
Walker, 96-5 in the series.
The Sonics are attempting to
become only the fifth team in
NBA history to win a seven-
game series after falling behind
