And he was right. Nix’s team scored more points in the track portion of the event, but the Longhorns’ field competitors simply had too much strength. In the final point tally, Texas had 189 points, Texas A&M had 150 and the Mavericks had 106. “We knew we couldn’t beat Texas, but we wanted to place better in the running events,” Nix said. “If you break the score down, we really did outrun Texas. “I was real pleased with the whole meet, with what our athletes did and (with) the orga nization of the meet.” The Aggies, without an entry in the heptathlon, watched the Longhorns’ Denise Armstrong win that event during competi tion Thursday and Friday. However, in Friday’s discus por tion of the meet, Texas A&M’s Vickilee Cobern qualified for the AIAW national meet by win ning with a throw of 155-3'/2. That meet will be held here May 27-29. The Aggies took three first places in Saturday’s final events. Freshman Chanoai Phillips won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53, Ellen Smith won the 400-meter hurdles with 1:00.17 and Novaita Samuels won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.16. In addition, Texas A&M placed second in eight events during the meet.
