Republicans are seeking their
parties’ nominations to run for
the U.S. Senate.
Sen. Lloyd Bentsen — has
served 16 years on Capitol Hill,
the past 12 in the Senate. He
served as U.S. representative
from 1949 to 1954. Bentsen
serves on the Senate Select Com
mittee on Intelligence.
Joe Sullivan — psychology
professor at San Antonio Col
lege. He was the Democratic
nominee for U.S. Congress, 21 st
District, in the last election.
On the Republican side, three
candidates are seeking the
nomination.
U.S. Rep. Jim Collins — first
elected to his 3rd Congressional
District seat in 1969.
State Sen. Walter Mengden
— served in the Texas House in
1971 and 1972 and has served in
the Texas Senate since 1973.
Don L. Richardson — has
never held political office; presi
dent of three computer com
panies.

however, the case will not move
to a trial jury before Saturday’s
primary.

Texas Legislature in 1970. Two

Railroad Commission and Con
gress.
Ann Richards — former Tra
vis County commissioner from
1976 to 1981; a first-time state
wide candidate.
John Cutright — has been a
staff aide to two state senators;
taught at San Antonio College.
Only one Republican has en
tered the race.
Millard K. Neptune — for
mer Travis County Republican
Party chairman.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms.
Two Republicans also have
entered the race.
State Sen. Mike Richards —
first-term state senator, has been
chairman of the board of two
Houston banks.
Raymond Frank — served as
Travis County sheriff from
1972 through 1980.
The two Democratic candidates
disagree about the need to
change the funding formula for
Texas A&M University, which
both say penalizes the University
for its rapid growth since fund
ing is based on enrollment fi
gures that quickly become out
dated.
