Mario Montuoro, 48, former secretary-treasurer of Laborers Union Local 29, confirmed Monday he will share in the $5 million top prize in the state’s Lotto” game. ■ Lottery officials declined Black hole in galaxy a possibility United Press International WASHINGTON — A myste rious powerhouse at the center of our Milky Way galaxy may be the result of a black hole gob bling up interstellar gas and dust, astronomers report. , Robert Brown of the Nation al Radio Astronomy Observa tory at (been Bank, W.Va., said observations of radio waves pro- dtt’ced by the hot, electrically charged gas in the galaxy’s cen ter supports the idea of a black hole in the middle of the Milky Way. ' A black hole in theory is an object so dense even light cannot escape its gravitational pull. Such an object would be invisi ble, but astronomers believe they have seen the radiation signatures of several black hole candidates in the centers of dis tant galaxies. , Dr. Marvin Leventhal of the Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ., reported scientists have gathered “fairly definite evi dence” for the presence of a smaller version of a black hole in the core of our galaxy. . “We may not have to look out millions of light years to other galaxies to find such things,” he said at a news conference. “Apparently there’s something like that in the Milky Way.” 'Leventhal described observa tions of a kind of gamma ray produced when electrons and positrons collide as they would whirling toward a black hole. v Dr. Richard Lingenfelter of the University of California at San Diego said such intense gamma radiation is a good indi cation of a black hole. He said the big question is the size of the object. It could be much smaller than Earth, yet have the mass of a hundred suns. Or, the black hole could be much bigger and have the mass of a few million Prof says names can hurt, help United Press International WASHINGTON — The old saying that names can never hurt me isn’t true, according to Ohio University professor of psychology — the names people give their children can hurt them all their life. Dr. James L. Bruning said a clflld with a name that elicits favorable reactions from other pepple starts off with an advan tage. In elementary school testing, essays written by children named Elmer, Hubert and Bertha received lower scores than essays written by children named David, Michael, Adele, Lisa or Karen. Later in life, he said, men are a,t>tracted to women with names like Karen, Deirdre, and Laura, while women prefer strong- spunding names like Michael, William and James. Now You Know U United Press International . More than 75 percent of the vyorld’s 850 active volcanoes are Within the “ring of fire” that stretches from Chile through Alaska and Siberia to New Zea land. Monday to confirm Montuoro was a winner. They scheduled a news conference to formally announce the winners’ names. But Montuoro and Susan Jennik, an employee of the law firm representing Montuoro, said state lottery officials con firmed Montuoro held the win ning number at a Monday meeting. “I’m going to set up a trust fund for union dissidents,” Montuoro said. “I’m going to help the people who are going I’ve been through what through.” Montuoro said he had played the same number in the Lotto game for five months and had watched his number drawn on television during the weekend. “It’s certainly unbelievable,” Jennik said. Montuoro has said Donovan, then an executive of the Schiavone Construction Co. of New Jersey, was present at a 1977 lunch at a Queens re staurant during which a second Schiavone executive handed Louis Sanzo, the president of his union local, an envelope con taining $2,000. Donovan has denied any wrongdoing and called Mon tuoro, a Marine Corps veteran who was charged with car theft in his youth, a “liar.” Leon Silverman, a New York corporate lawyer, was appointed in December as a special pro secutor to investigate the charges. A number of witnesses have appeared before a federal grand jury in connection with Montuoro’s allegations. Silver- man has declined to comment on the probe. Montuoro also has charged Schiavone maintained "no- show” employees on its payroll and Local 29 officials received free lumber and other gif ts and services from the company. Montuoro is a self-described union dissident who says he has been fighting corruption and alleged mob influence in labor for years. - APPLICATIONS FOR NAVAL FLIGHT TRAIN!!
