Defector skips ship in Port of Houston tflocvn V** Serving Luncheon Buffet Sunday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 $4.50 plus tax United Press International HOUSTON — A Polish sea man who jumped overboard one day before his ship left a Port of Houston dock was calm and in good shape, a city coun cilman says. The seaman, 21, who is ap plying for political asylum in the United States, slipped from the cargo ship Zabrze Friday. He is the 12th Pole to jump ship in Houston since the Polish gov ernment began its crackdown on dissidents. The seaman, who refused to give his name, told Councilman Dale Gorczynski he was due to be drafted into the Polish Army in May. Gorczynski said the defector is calm and seems to be in good shape. The defector escaped despite the possible presence of agents from the Polish secret police on the ship, Gorczynski said. “He doesn’t feel they (ship’s officers) are taking any extraor dinary security measures,” Gorczynski said. “He said there may be some members of the Polish secret police on them now. He doesn’t have proof of that, but it is the talk going around.” In January, five seaman and two of their wives left the Zabrze and applied to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for permanent residence in the Un ited States. Since then, one Pol ish seaman from the Zawiercie and three off the Wystianski lef t their ships. None of the previous defec tors has been granted asylum yet, a process Gorczynski said he understood took a good deal of time.
