After investigating potential employers, students attend a counseling session with a dire ctor and decide where they would like to work. A cover recommendation let ter and a copy of the co-op de gree plan are sent to the em ployer with the student’s appli cation. The employer is asked to make a decision in three to four weeks. The offer or rejection let ter is sent directly to the student. Students who participate in the co-op program must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. Students also may receive academic credit, if his college offers credit for co-oping. The colleges of liberal arts and geos ciences do not offer academic credit for co-oping. Students who receive acade mic credit for co-oping are cons idered full-time students, and pay tuition and fees. They have Texas A&M ID cards and are free to participate in campus activities. Students not registered for co-op credit must file for re admission to the University be fore entering school following a work term, except when they co op in the summer. Co-oping provides a break from school that many students need, Yates said. The co-op program also gives opportunity for student growth and matur ing through development of good professional work habits, he said. Dr. Henry Pope, the Liberal Arts Cooperative Education Program coordinator, said co oping gives a student the chance to gain new friendships and so- :iaf t cial experiences. A student also earns money that could help de fray college costs, he said. Texas A&M co-op students earned $3.6 million during the 1980-81 school year, Yates said. Cooperative education could not continue to exist without providing services for business and industry, he said. Many companies hire co-op students after they graduate be cause they already are trained and save companies recruiting time, Yates said. Pope said: “They (co-op stu dents) can have a job before they graduate."
