United Press International
TUSKEGEE, Ala. — About
50 civil rights marchers who
hope a 1960s-style protest will
help extend the Voting Rights
Act converged Monday for the
start of a months-long trek
across five states to Washington.
The Rev. Joseph Lowery, di
rector of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, said
marchers will cross Alabama,
Georgia, North Carolina, South
Carolina and Virginia, organiz
ing voter registration drives
along the 2,000-mile route.
The marchers expect to
reach’ Washington in late June
or early July and Lowery said
they may erect a tent encamp
ment on Capitol Hill similar to
the “Resurrection City” com
pound built during the 1968
“poor people’s march.”
Tuskegee Mayor Johnny
Ford said: “Clearly we’ve got to
resort back to basics.
“We must negotiate on one
hand, but on the other hand, we
must take to the streets.”
Lowery said: “We don’t know
how long we will stay in
Washington. We will stay there
long enough for the president,
the Congress and the people to
be made aware of our presence.”
He said Atlanta Mayor
Andrew Young, an aide to King
during the years of civil rights
demonstrations; King’s widow,
Coretta Scott King; United Auto
Workers President Douglas
Fraser; and playwright Ossie
Davis will join the marchers at
various points along the route.
Although voting rights will be
a primary focus of the protest,
Lowery said the marchers, who
will ride buses between the
dozens of cities along their
route, also will protest rising un
employment and “the frighten-

ing military buildup that emas
culates financing for life-
support programs.”
He said: “Blacks hold less
than 2 percent of the elective
offices in this nation and face an
intensifying resistance to politic
al advancement.”
Lowery and the Rev. Jesse
Jackson, head of Operation
PUSH, based in Chicago,
appeared at a news conference
last week to announce the
march.
Both civil rights leaders said
new forms of voting abuse
against blacks have occurred in
recent years, including reappor
tionment that dilutes black vot
ing strength and at-large elec
tions that favor white voting ma
jorities.
Dallas lead-level blood tests not used
United Press International
DALLAS - Federal officals
cannot use city tests showing un
safe levels of lead in residents’
blood to locate the source of con
tamination.
The officials say the tests fail
to pinpoint and compare con
tamination among specific areas
within a half-mile of three lead
smelters.
The tests show nearly 70 per
cent of the people whose blood
contains unsafe levels of lead
live within the half-mile zone.
The figure goes up to 80 per
cent when it includes those who
frequently visit or work in the
area.
About 50 people recently
marched through an east Dallas
neighborhood protesting with
signs that read “Remove the lead
before we’re dead.”
Demonstrators said they
were protesting because of a
1980 Environmental Protection
Agency test that revealed lead
levels more than 90 times the
amount some experts said can
cause adverse health effects, in
cluding brain damage in chil
dren.
