LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers
are looking to Fernando Valenzuela tonight to
snap a six-game losing streak, their longest in
three years.
Valenzuela, the league’s Most Valuable Player
and Gy Young Award winner last season, has a 1 -1
record going into tonight’s game against the
Houston Astros, who handed the Dodgers their
sixth straight loss in a 6-4 meeting Monday at
Dodger Stadium. It was the First time since 1979
the Dodgers had endured six straight losses.
The win went to ex-Dodger Don Sutton, who
pitched seven innings For his second triumph,
while Terry Forster, 1-2, took the loss.
Veteran infielder Art Howe drove in the game
winning runs that Forster gave up and capped a
Four-run sixth inning rally that sent the Dodgers
reeling.
“It was a good win,” said Howe, who was signed
by Houston in 1976. “We had lost three in a row at
the Dome. It’s tough to win here. When I came up
in the sixth inning, I got the green light to swing
on a 3-0 pitch. I wasjust trying to hit the ball hard
— anything to get a run batted in. This place
charges you up. It’s Fun to play baseball here.”
The Astros laced Five consecutive hits oFF three
pitchers in the sixth before Alejandro Pena re
tired to the side. Phil Garner and Jose Cruz sing
led off starter Burt Hooton and Forster took over
on the mound. Alan Ashby singled in Garner and
Ray Knight doubled in Cruz. Pena took over and
Howe’s long single drove in Ashby and Knight.
Dodgers’ Manager Tom Lasorda said he
thought Hooton was “running out of gas” in the
sixth, which was why he took him out.
“It looked like he had lost it,” Lasorda said. “1
didn’t think he had a good fastball when I took
him out. If a reliever holds the lead, it makes you
look good, but it was one of those things.”
Hooton said he wasn’t surprised.
“I felt I was throwing all right, even though I
wasn’t real sharp,” he said. “Sometimes you have
to struggle a little. But I still felt strong. I can’t say
1 was surprised when the manager took me out. It
was his decision.”
