Budweiser takes front line ^ Students who plan to Pre-Register for the Fall =E M Semester in the General Studies Program are E from Coors in beer battle United Press International DALLAS — Industry figures show Anheuser-Busch’s Bud weiser is now the top-selling beer in Texas, considered the country s most competitive mar ket, while a light beer has moved into the runner-up slot. Beer industry figures re leased Thursday show Budweis er, advertised as the “king of beers,” has captured the hearts and bellies of Texas beer drink ers. It marked the first time in Anheuser-Busch’s 105-year his tory that it had a No. 1 beer in Texas. The data, based on beer ship ments, also showed the beer which gained the largest market increase was Miller Lite, brewed by Busch’s archcompetitor, Phi lip Morris, which outsells any other beermaker overall. “Light beer seems to be appealing to your Texas hard- drinking honky-tonk type,” Alan Easton, a spokesman for Philip Morris, said. “He can stand and drink longer. We think our beer is best, of course.” The No. 3 beer is Coors, the former champ, according to trade figures released Thursday. “In Texas we’ve got a dog fight going on,” said an industry source in Dallas. “A lot of adver tising dollars are being poured in. This is a real beer war, prob ably the toughest in the United States. “It will be interesting to see what happens when Budweiser brings in its light beer. Up to now that has not been a factor in Texas.” Budweiser officials were un available for comment. Philip Morris officials said Texas may become the first state in the nation in which a diet beer becomes king. Miller Lite beer took a 5.4 percent jump last year from its 12.3 percent 1980 Texas market share. It is now less than a per centage point behind Budweis er, which holds 18.6 percent of the Texas market. Coors beer dropped from the No. 1 slot, holding 20.4 percent in 1980, to No. 3 with 16.5 per cent. “Texas is a very, very impor tant state to the brewing indus try,” Easton said. “It is booming economically 'and per capita beer consumption is among the thi happens in Texas seems to cause s th** 1 Apr. 16. or indicate a trend across the =■ = URGED to pick up a Pre-registration Form in E E Room 100 of Harrington Tower from Mar. 29 § southwestern Sunbelt.” ^iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiimiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuii THIRD ANNUAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Skrrjtch Softba!! mmei Life 7 highest in the country.
