The retrospective and reun ion were held on the 40th birth day of Mighty Mouse, who was conceived in the New Rochelle studio first as Supermouse in the 1942 cartoon, "Mouse of Tomorrow.” These characters were bom in the Terry toon Studio, the only major animation studio on the East Coast until it was disman tled in the early 1970s. By that time, the studio had turned out over 1,000 5-to-7 mi nute cartoons, with a 7-minute cartoon requiring more than 5,000 separate scenes and draw ings. The driving force behind the company was the late Paul Ter ry. His critics — and often his employees — considered him stubborn, skeptical of new ideas and a spendthrift. But they all agreed he was a master busi nessman who made Terrytoons an important force in the movies and, later, in television. "Disney is the Tiffany's in this business, I am the Wool- worth's,” Terry liked to say. Through his doors passed such talents as Jules Feiffer, Joseph Barbera — half of the Hanna-Barbera team that cre ated the "Flintsones” — and Ralph Bakshi, who produced the first X-rated cartoon, "Fritz the Cat.” Terry made his name with cartoons of Aesop's Fables, which used animals to tell a story and provide a "moral" that usually bore only passing refer ence to the story the audience had just seen. One of Terry's most memor able sight gags — and one which he used for all it was worth — was the concept of "raining cats and dogs” to which viewers were treated to a steady stream of cats and dogs pouring from the heavens onto Farmer Alfal fa's pastures. Terrytoons began in the 1920s as silent cartoons, and were embellished in the '30s with the advent of sound, color in the 1940s and television in the 1950s. By the '60s, the studio was creating made-for-TV shows such as "Deputy Dawg” and "Hector Heathcote." But by the end of the '60s, film distributors were content to re lease made-for-TV cartoons to the theaters and, with competi tion from Warner Bros, and Hanna-Barbera on the West Coast, the demand for the East Coast Terrytoons declined. But Viacom, present owner of Terrytoons and 20th Century Fox continues to re-release old Terrytoons worldwide. "I've always felt that when you went to a movie and you saw that there was going to be a cartoon on before the feature — no matter how old you were — it was like somebody just gave you a lollipop," a Viacome offi cial says. Doug Crane, 47, another Ter- rytoon alumnus and freelance animator, who recently worked on the "Really Rosie" television special and the "Raggedy Ann and Andy” theatrical bemoans the demise of the studio. "Ev erything is freelance on the East Coast now. There's no place for young animators to train. "My son wants to be an ani mator and when things are slow I'll critique his stuff, but when I'm working I just don't have the time. Where are animators going to learn their trade?” Friday Specials 9:00 CD WHO WILL PROTECT THE FAMILY?
