NEW YORK — The key wit
ness in a $5.5 million fraud in
vestigation, slain by an apparent
hit man, had asked for federal
protection after another woman
involved in the case vanished,
her lawyer says. The hit man
also killed three men trying to
help her.
The slain witness, Margaret
Barbera, 38, had pleaded guilty
March 12 to a fraud charge in
connection with an FBI investi
gation.
“If they would have provided
it (protection), she would still be
alive,” said James Coley, Barber-
a’s attorney.
Barbera was found dead in a
rubble-strewn cobblestone alley
in Lower Manhattan early Tues
day morning, with a single gun
shot w;faund in the back of her
head./
Shfe was killed Monday even
ing on the roof of a parking gar
age near the Hudson River.
Three CBS employees who saw
her body being stuffed into a
white van also were shot dead by
the gunman, who apparently
thought the three witnessed the
slaying.
Police believe the killer, a
I white man in his 30s who used a
.22-caliber pistol, is a profession
al hit man.
Chief of Detectives James Sul
livan said the slayings also are
linked to the disappearance and
probable death of Jenny Soo
Chin, 46, of Teaneck, N.J.
Barbera had hired her friend,
Chin, to help her keep financial
records at Candor. Chin dis
appeared Jan. 5, 1978, and was
never seen again. Her car was
found in midtown Manhattan
Jan. 11. There were bloodstains
and a .22-caliber shell casing in
the vehicle, Sullivan said.
Court papers show Barbera
of Queens was cooperating with
federal authorities in a $5.5 mil
lion embezzlement investigation
involving her former employer,
Candor Diamonds in midtown
Manhattan.
The shell casing found in
Chin’s car matched those found
at the garage, Sullivan said.
Court papers filed in federal
bankruptcy court in the Candor
case allege Barbera tried to
shake down one of Candor’s
owners, Irwin Margolies, for
$100,000.
Barbera left the diamond
importing firm last May and had
begun working at a camera shop
near the parking garage where
she was killed. The facility is also
used by CBS employees.

Ex-boxer prefers life as ‘shield’
United Press International
PETALUMA, Calif. — The
first thing Steve Sullivan does
when he gets a job is to make out
a list of things he will need from
his employer. One of those lists:
9mm handgun, machine gun,
smoke grenades, grenade laun
cher.
Sullivan said his work is legal.
He’s a bodyguard.
Sullivan, 29, a former Golden
Gloves heavyweight boxer, said
he prefers the danger, exotic
places and earnings of as much
as $1,000 a day of his current
craft to the bruises, small fame
and no pay of the prizefighter.
Sullivan serves as a “shield”
for wealthy people, many of

Here’s what they say
about our Congressman,
Phil Gramm:
“Gramm is young, intelligent, articulate, dedicated, outspoken and
courageous ...” THE EAGLE/Bryan-College Station
“It is unusual for a second term Congressman with no formal
leadership position to play such a major role.” NEW YORK TIMES
“He is now only in his second term in Congress but has risen to become
one of its most important members.” SAN ANGELO STANDARD-TIMES
“Clout is the language they talk up in Washington, and Gramm at this
juncture would appear to be loaded with the stuff.” CORPUS CHRISTI
CALLER-TIMES
“Texans enjoy a strong national influence, with Vice President George
Bush, Sen. John Tower and U.S. Rep. Phil Gramm,” DALLAS
MORNING NEWS
“He is a man who is in step with the times and with the needs and
desires of the American people as is no other prominent Democrat. He is a
man who has been in the forefront of creating vital legislation and worked
skillfully and successfully to get that legislation enacted into law.”
ROCKDALE REPORTER
“He’s been following the urging of his constituents and a national
mandate to cut spending and balance the budget.” ABILENE
REPORTER-NEWS
“Gramm’s ties with the Reagan budget cutting program do not involve
Gramm adopting Reagan, but the Reaganites adopting Gramm’s thinking,
philosophy and tactics ...” TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM
“... one of a dying breed of conservative Democrats who understands
the nation’s problems. He is a fiscal conservative and a military hard-liner.
He detests red tape and government waste and fraud. We need him.”
OAK CLIFF TRIBUNE
“Rep. Phil Gramm is one of those rare politicians who says the same
things to the folks back home that he says in Washington ... an agressive
champion of conservative government.” DALLAS TIMES HERALD
“In the friendlier confines of his home district ... Gramm is viewed as
an atypical politician, someone willing to stand up for his convictions and
be the unwavering voice of the people he represents.” DALLAS
MORNING NEWS
“... did Phil Gramm do in Washington what voters sent him up to do
3>/2 years ago? The answer is a tall ‘YES’...” CLEBURNE TIMES-REVIEW
“Mr. Gramm talked about fiscal responsibility, about cutting
government spending, about getting big government off the people’s back
and about reducing the tax burden. We liked what he said and we elected
him. And he delivered ...” CORSICANA DAIL Y SUN
