Thomas Caskey, head of the genetics section at Baylor, said Tuesday. “We feel we’ve done something pretty significant.” Cloning means scientists can Seniors! Last Chance Elephanl T - shirts ON SALE APRIL 12-16 MSC MAIN HALLWAY 10:00-2:00 SPONSORED BY CLASS 82 make exact copies of the gene in large quantities. Genes have been successfully cloned in hamsters, mice and human cell cultures. The particular gene that was cloned is connected with a defi ciency in an enzyme called hypo- xanthine phosphoribosyltrans- ferase or HPRT, Caskey said. In its more severe form, a deficiency of HPRT causes Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, in which babies are born severely mentally retarded and with a tendency toward self- mutilation. Babies afflicted with the incurable syndrome often bite and scratch themselves and beat their heads with hard ob jects. In its milder form, the defi ciency results in gouty arthritis and serious kidney problems. About 10 percent of all gouty arthritis is the result of the defi ciency. The HPRT deficiency occurs when the gene does not stimu late the cell to produce enough of the enzyme, which Caskey de scribes as being essential to the cell’s “housekeeping” functions. The gene is thought to be close to other genes, which when defective, can cause hemophilia — excessive bleeding — or men tal retardation. Because so little of the en zyme is produced by the cell, it was difficult to clone the gene, Caskey said. “We are working toward being able to correct the genetic defect,” Caskey said. He hopes by studying the genes and chromosomes, doc tors will be able to identify women who are carriers of the diseases before they become pregnant. Then the women could be told of their chances of having infants with some physic al defects. Caskey’s findings are being reported in this month’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. o Wtt *749.9! DUR DEAL *399 0 HITACHI Mini-Component Stem System including Mete!
