United Press International
DALLAS — The union repre
senting Braniff International’s
maintenance and security per
sonnel has filed a suit claiming
the airline cancelled a contract
with its workers in order to
obtain employees from com
panies using non-union per
sonnel.
The suit, filed Tuesday in
U.S. District Court by the Inter
national Brotherhood of
Teamsters, does not seek speci
fic monetary damages, but asks
Judge Patrick Higginbotham to
reinstate the union’s contract.
However, Braniff spokesman
Sam Coats said that the suit is
without merit and that the com
pany will not comment further.
The Teamsters union has
represented the security and
maintenance workers since
1974, the suit says, and has a
contract that runs through this
year.
The suit claims that on March
1, Bekins Building Maintenance
Co. began providing the mainte
nance and security personnel at
corporate headquarters and at
Brdniff terminals in Houston
and at Dallas-Fort Worth Re
gional Airport.
The union charges that Be
kins hired few union employees
and that it paid lower wages, eli
minated some benefits and sus
pended the contract’s grievance
procedure.

One-third of Mexican illegals
now in Texas, studies show
United Press International
AUSTIN — Nearly one-third
of the nation’s Mexican illegal
aliens live in Texas, where one
of every five Hispanic residents
is a person who has no legal right
to be in the United States, two
University of Texas researchers
say.
Preliminary studies show the
average Mexican illegal alien is
23, married, poorly educated
and was an agriculture worker
in Mexico but does not necessar
ily pursue the same vocation in
the United States.

Bean and King said Tuesday
that an average of 750,000 illeg
al Mexican workers were in
Texas during the 1980 census.
They also stressed the number
would grow throughout the
1980s.
The report also concluded
there were 2.1 to 2.5 million
illegal aliens in the nation dur
ing 1980.
The report was based on a
combination of U.S. census
material and the Mexican cen
sus. Bean said people 15 to 34
years old comprised the largest
group of illegal immigrants.
The task force also received
the first stage of a survey that
hopes to identify the responses
and characteristics of illegal im
migrants in Texas.
