The University of Houston

Going into this weekend’s three-game series with Houston, the
Texas A&M baseball team needed to have a good showing against
the second-ranked Cougars.
After losing two of three games, Head Coach Tom Chandler
said the Aggies can’t afford to lose many more games and still
qualify for the Southwest Conference post-season tournament.
“Our backs are against the wall and we need to make a turnar
ound,” he said.
Texas A&M lost Friday’s first game 4-2 but came back to defeat
the Cougars 6-5 in the first game of Saturday’s double-header. The
Cougars won the final game of the series 15-9.
Chandler also said, however, that the tournament isn’t out of
reach for the Aggies.
“Texas, Arkansas and Houston are probably shoo-ins for the
tournament,” he said, “but that fourth spot is still open and we’re
going to have to fight to get in there.”
In order to reach that goal, Chandler said, the Aggies’ pitching
will have to improve.
“We’ve really had a pitching breakdown this year,” he said.
“There have been some real disappointments in our pitching staff.
(Starter Rick) Luecken missed a couple of weeks with the tendoni
tis he had, and (Robert) Slavens and (Steve) Davis are a little bit of a
disappointment because they can’t seem to get the ball over the
plate.”
In Friday’s first game, the Cougars scored two runs off starter
David Flores in both the first and second innings.
Center fielder Mark Lavespere opened the scoring for the
Cougars when he hit a single up the middle, went to third on a pair
of sacrifices, and scored on Flores’ wild pitch.
First baseman Jeff Achilles made the score 2-0 by hitting his
fifth home run of the year over the left field wall. Flores got out of
the inning by striking out designated hitter Mike Breslin.
The Cougars scored two more runs in the second inning when
Flores walked two Houston batters and gave up a two-run triple to
Lavespere.
After the second inning, Flores settled down and combined with
Phillip Taylor to keep the Cougars scoreless for the rest of the
game. Taylor came on in relief in the eighth inning.
On offense, however, the Aggie bats could only score two runs
on seven hits. Both runs were scored by center fielder Billy
Cannon.
Doug Drabek was the winning pitcher for the Cougars as Flores
lost his second game of the year against six wins.
In the first game of Saturday’s double-header, the Aggie pitch
ing staff gave up fewer hits and walks than in Friday’s game.
With the score tied at five at the end of regulation play, Cannon
reached first in the eighth inning when he outran the throw by
Cougar shortstop Brett Baker. Cannon was out at second, howev
er, when Buddy Haney hit into a fielder’s choice.
With Haney on first and one out, the Cougars had a chance to
turn a double play and go into another extra inning of play. But
second baseman Corky Swindell made a bad throw to second,
leaving Haney safe at second and Tom Dean Chandler safe at first.
Grant Priess then scored Haney on a single to right field.
Rock King was the winning pitcher in relief as he improved his
record to 3-0.
